I knew exactly what I was going to do with these old chairs. I wanted to give them new life with a fresh coat of colorful paint and turn them into a colorful outdoor bench.
Although the chairs were a little damaged, it was perfectly fine. I mean, after all… they headed to the dump!
All they needed was a good cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. I’m so glad we were able to breathe new life into these old chairs and turn them into a colorful renewed bench for your garden.
Make A Two Pallet Potting Bench
Are you ready to see how to turn two old chairs and a pallet into a colorful outdoor bench for your garden?
For starters, you want to give the chairs a good cleaning. Especially if you use old trash chairs like mine!
After we got them for free from someone on Facebook, they also sat in our garage for a few months until I tackled this DIY bench.
Pallet Bench Project
This will remove any residue and/or texture on the chairs and give the exterior paint something to stick to.
You can use a slightly damp cloth or dust. I like tacky cloths because they are a bit sticky and catch all the sanding dust.
Now our recycled bench is going out into our garden, so I decided to go for quality exterior paint to extend the life of the outdoor furniture.

Sherwin Williams was kind enough to send me Outdoor Resilience Acrylic Latex Paint to try out on this project. The Resilience line offers exceptional moisture resistance, which I really need since we live in a climate with harsh winters and sunny summers.
I used a brush to apply the paint, but you can also use a paint sprayer if you have one to make this bench project an even faster DIY.
As I mentioned in the video below, when painting outdoor furniture you really want to think about covering the furniture completely, not just covering the wood where you can see.

Exterior paint is used as a sealant for wooden furniture, so it’s important to get into every corner.
Also, don’t forget to paint the bottom of the chairs and even the bottom of the legs where the chair touches the floor!
Note: If you suspect that your outdoor bench may sit in puddles, you can also attach uprights to the bottom of the legs so that it does not rest directly on the ground.

I ended up doing two coats of exterior paint. If I had applied it a little thicker, I probably could have gotten away with one…but I tended to paint in lighter layers, even if it took me a little longer. It ends up being a bit cleaner.
After applying 2 layers of exterior paint and waiting for them to dry, I liked the color (which by the way is Refresh by Sherwin Williams). But I just didn’t like how the bench seat changed.
My style is usually a bit more subdued and country. I knew I couldn’t mess up the chairs like I usually do when I paint furniture. The outer layers of paint needed to be intact to provide moisture protection for this outdoor bench, so I definitely couldn’t sand them. I ended up dry brushing the chairs with white acrylic paint.

Dry brushing is a very simple technique you can use to add some character to painted furniture. Dry brushing is also excellent for bringing out the texture of the furniture. It’s also very easy to make!
All you do is take a crappy old brush and put some paint on it and then rub the paint on a paper towel or rag.
Then gently move the brush over the piece of furniture, barely touching it. Always brush against the grain of the wood.

You can always go back and add more white character with a dry brush, so start small and be light on the brush.
If you end up with too much white in some areas, you can go back with the exterior paint color and use the same dry brush technique to reduce the white.
While the paint is drying, you can start working on the wooden panels of the bar. We always have a few pallets in our house because we’re always using them for DIY pallet wood projects (in fact, we even built our own pallet wood bed!)

Once you have your wood panel surface, you can measure your bench and, if necessary, cut the pieces to the correct size to fit the bench.
We ended up changing our chairs a bit to match the exact width of the mattress pieces, so there were fewer cuts involved.
I used a nail gun to attach the wood panels from the board to the bench seat. I added 2 nails to each plank of wood plant that met with a piece of the chair seat.

Be sure to leave small spaces between the wooden parts of the board to allow water to pass through and not create puddles on the seat.
I also used a little more white paint and the dry brush painting technique to make the wood planks in the palette look the same!
I painted another piece of pallet the same color as the chairs and nailed it to the bottom of the chairs as additional support beams.

Once the seat is in place and the paint is completely dry, you definitely want to seal this bench seat before you take it outside.
The exterior paint itself probably won’t need to be sealed, but you will need to seal the wood of the pallet. I used an acrylic spray. Don’t forget to do the edges and the bottom too!
I can imagine this repurposed bench will soak up a lot of fun backyard parties under the stars. We still have plenty of time in the summer to enjoy this class before winter arrives.

You can certainly customize the recycled bench for your garden with a choice of exterior color. If you want to liven up this outdoor bench even more, you can paint on some additional decorations.
It was so easy to make this recycled bench for your garden. This is a great DIY project for beginners with little investment involved. I’m sure you can find plenty of options for old chairs at your local thrift store or Facebook Marketplace, CraigsList. You might even find something free like me!

I cut the chairs straight for the back legs and then sanded what will be the sides of my bench.
I found some benches done the same way on Pinterest and they all seemed to agree that it was better to make a seat frame directly on the chairs instead of making a frame first and then adding it, drilling holes in the sides. Then I marked and cut as I went.
