How To Make A Farmhouse Table – Building and creating with my hands has always been a passion of mine and something I love to share with others. When I came across the table plans I was excited and wanted to make as detailed a video as possible to share online on how to make a farmhouse table.
I’ve done quite a few albums over the past few years, but this one seems to be one of my favorites for its bold look. It is made of 4×4, 2×4 and 2×10 lumber. The large beams give this table a bold look and make it as strong as a tank. This farmhouse table set is sure to be a hit with your ladies.
How To Make A Farmhouse Table
The source kit for this project is from Ana White’s website, which has hundreds of free plans available. I changed the table so that the table is wider and longer. Larger sizes give more room to spread out and center food or items. This table is the conversation piece and works well in our parties and dinners. This farmhouse tableau will last for years and be passed down to family members for generations. Whitney from Shanty-2-Chic also posted about making this board and collaborating with Ana-White on her project.

The complete package can be found on Ana’s website and is available for download in PDF format. Ana White and Whitney from Shanty-2-Chic collaborated on the plan. This project was very simple and took about a day + turnaround time to build.
Minor Changes: The only changes I made to Ana’s plans were the overall measurements. I used another 2×10 to increase the width of the board. I cut the top of the table a little longer and widened the width of the bottom of the table. I show the modified table top in the image below. You can modify your board from the pack to suit your needs.

Urban Farmhouse Table
* 6-inch and 4.5-inch screws are sometimes hard to find. I would recommend going to a supply contractor or local hardware/lumber store. Only select Home Depot and Lowes stores carry it.

For this project, you will need to purchase 4×4, 2×10, and 2×4 boards. You can find these boards at your local lumber yard. Take the time to find quality boards that are straight and slightly curved.
Diy Round Farmhouse Table With Free Plans
First I made the table top out of 2x10s. I used 5 2×10 for the main part of the board and 2×10 for each end of the board. Ana’s plan calls for four main tables, but I wanted to spread out a little more area. I used a 12 inch miter saw for all the cuts. I cut 5 boards 69 inches long.
Here is a view of the table top. A 2×10 board is actually 9 1/4 inches wide. The overall dimensions of the roof are 46 1/4 inches x 87 1/2 inches.
Align all the boards and mark where you want to drill the holes for the pockets. I usually place the pocket holes about 8 to 10 inches apart.

Set the Kreg Jig to the 1 1/2 inch setting for material thickness. (My video says a 2 1/2 inch setting, but I meant to say 1 1/2 inches.)
Attach each board with 2.5 inch Kreg Jig screws. This helps hold the boards together and uses less pressure to hold the boards together.
Also drill two holes at the end of each board. They are used to connect the main board to the board.

I had to adjust the width of the base a bit to accommodate a wider table top. Here is a diagram of the changes I made to Ana’s plan.
I picked up both ends of the 4×4. I used 6 inch torque screws (also known as star pattern screws or foot screws) to attach them (about 3 per joint). Two vertical boards are cut at an angle of 10 degrees (parallel to each other). The lower horizontal plane is also cut at an angle of 10 degrees (it is not parallel).

Join the two ends with 4×4 horizontal blocks at the top and bottom. I didn’t have an extra hand to help me so I used Jack Clamps to hold it together while I secured the boards with 6 inch screws. I attached two 2×4’s horizontally using Kreg Jig 2.5 inch screws.
Attach the plinth to the ceiling using 4.5″ screws through the 4×4 screws. Use 2″ torque screws to attach the 2×4 to the table top. (I choked a little)
Cut the two braces at a 45 degree angle. Connect with 2-3 screws on the top and bottom that are 6 inches long. Drill the screw at an angle.
How To Build A Wooden Farmhouse Bench Diy
This is how the finished board looks before the piece is painted and sealed. I also made a bench suitable for this table. You can find the plans by clicking here. I adjusted the width so it was 69″ total. Instead of using 2 x 10 for plates, I use 2 x 8. Everything else is the same as Anna’s plan. The inside area of my desk to accommodate the stool is 73″, leaving 2 inches of wiggle room on either side of the bench for easy getting on and off.
The next step is to create a custom menu for you. I decided to update the farmhouse table using thrift store tools to make it look worn. I used a nail to make wormhole markings and a circular saw blade and hammer to add character to the table.
Then I mounted the old screws with a blowtorch and made quick screw marks in one corner of the table top.

I used a solution of steel wool and #00 white vinegar to coat the wood and give it an aged look. Place a handful of steel wool in a glass and add white vinegar. Allow the vinegar to soak the steel wool for at least 3 to 4 days. The mixture will get darker the longer you leave it. I let it sit for a week. Once you have dried it, just apply the mixture to your sections. Oxidation occurs when the compounds react with the tannins in the wood, resulting in color changes. It turns pine wood dark blue, grey, brown and black. Do not use white pine as it will not darken at all. If you prefer to use color, Minwax has great options to choose from. Some of my favorites are Special Walnut, Dark Walnut, Provincial, Weathered Grey, and Golden Oak.
* You can always dilute the mixture if it gets too strong. Just pour some of the thick mixture into a new cup and add white vinegar. Wipe the solution off the table with a clean cloth. Use a brush to get to hard-to-reach places.
Allow the solution to soak and dry for about 6 hours. The board will darken slightly depending on how strong your solution is. Every table will have slightly different stains and you never know exactly how it will turn out. That’s the fun part!

This is what my counter looked like the next morning when it was completely dry. It looks a little dull until the polyurethane is applied.
I finished the bench using the same method. I love the mix and the lines made with steel wool and vines. I love the rustic finish. However, I know that not everyone does, so a wood stain conditioner may be a better choice if you are looking for a more even, consistent finish. Minwax creates a preservative for wood and helps the paint apply more evenly.
Brush or paint 2-3 thin coats of Minwax Polyurethane. The finish brightens the color and warms the appearance of the wood, giving it a honey glow.

Let the last layer dry and ask a few friends to help you carry the board into your home. This table is heavy, so bring your friends pizza and beer.
