Building a living epoxy coffee table sounds pretty easy, right? Take a piece of live wood, cut it in half, shape it, pour resin on it, remove the shape…easy. Well, it wasn’t for me. If you’re thinking about making your own epoxy river table, you can learn a thing or two from my mistakes.

The basic steps to building a living river table seem simple enough, but it’s not a cheap project, so you definitely don’t want to take it apart. Do your research. I didn’t do enough research beforehand. I usually like to jump into a project and then learn from my mistakes. In retrospect, here are some lessons I should have read a long time ago:

I started this River coffee table with a live piece of cherry wood that I purchased from The Wood Source in Ottawa. It was about four feet long and 18 inches wide. Tony cut it in half on a circular saw, then sanded it and removed the bark from the live edge.

Then I built the modules. I used strips of 3/4″ melamine for the sides of the pans and 1/4″ melamine for the bottom.

I thought the 1/4″ melamine for the bottom was smooth and the side table would come off once the resin dried. Don’t do it!

1/4 inch mdf did not work. No, it was more like a dish. And that was only after a few hours and using a belt sander to remove the rest. Save time and use thicker melamine. For molds!

After preparing the cherry tree and building the mold, it’s time to pour the resin. First I mixed a small amount of two part epoxy and coated the bottom of the mold. This way you won’t get bubbles on the bottom of the coffee table. I then carefully placed two pieces of live wood into the molds and pressed them to the mold.

Next, it’s time to mix the resin for the river. I mixed a liter of resin and added bright blue paint and green paint. The plan was to turn the river a clear aqua blue to resemble a tropical ocean. I just thought the amount of dye I would add would be the perfect color. It looked fine when I mixed it, but when the resin hardened, the color changed. It looked more like a toxic dump in the river than a Jamaican beach, and I didn’t like it.

My goal was to make a resin cast with a perfectly smooth glass finish and finish. It didn’t happen. As I said, I spent hours on the melamine underneath and then spent a lot of time leveling the top. Here’s how the top looked after sanding…

Now let’s get back to the matter of color, because the story of this coffee table turns out to be really good

To set the color, I mixed a small amount of epoxy and added lots of light blue paint and a small drop of opaque black pigment. I poured it on the bottom of the coffee table, on the river side of the coffee table.

After it has hardened, I will sand the resin to give it a matte finish. From the top of the table, the color was saturated with a beautiful blue-blue.

The final step for this resin coffee table was to pour the flood on top. I mixed the resin, poured it on top, and trimmed the edges using straight cardboard.

You can then remove any bubbles using a torch or straw. Once you’re happy with the top and make sure there are no drips on the sides or bottom, forget it! Allow to set for 24 hours without touching.

My last mistake was that I (or Tony, not too sure who to blame) had to touch the resin before it hardened and left a fingerprint. I was thinking of casting it all down and getting a matte finish, but the gloss epoxy is so pretty. Then I lightly sanded 400 grit paper over the top to remove the fingerprint and applied another layer of epoxy. The end result was perfect, with no fingerprints and a smooth and shiny finish.

Won’t they ruin your socks if you spend all that time working on the top of the table only to have the top screw come off when installing the legs? No, not a funny tone. It didn’t happen to me. Actually, installing the legs was the smoothest part of this coffee table.

I bought the metal legs at Lowe’s and spray painted them matte black. To install them, I pre-drilled a hole and used 5/8″ screws to attach the legs to the top.

Overall, I’m very happy with how this riverside coffee table turned out. I made a few mistakes, but I managed to fix them and still got a nice piece of furniture. Have you ever made a River coffee table? Was your build a little smoother than my experience?

Cover and seal the mold with waterproof tape to prevent the epoxy from leaking later.
