How To Make Concrete Table With Wood Inlay

How To Make Concrete Table With Wood Inlay – I am very excited to share this building with you. I’ve always wanted a concrete coffee table, but lifting all those heavy bags, shaping and waiting for it to harden was too much for me. So when I found this concrete feather cover, I knew I wanted to try it.

I used pressure treated 2x4s, but I don’t know if that was necessary because they ended up closed. But for a few extra dollars, if you’re going to put your coffee table outside, I recommend going with them.

Always wear a dust mask when cutting wood, but especially when working with pressure treated materials. you don’t want to breathe dirty.

Attach the top and bottom frames using 1 1/2″ pocket holes with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure your screws are designed for outdoor use. The top frame has 4 cross supports and the bottom frame only 2 because no one will sit on this side.

I love these ponies Jorgensen’s large F-style grips are lightweight and give you extra support when the going gets tough.

Join the bottom and top frames to the supports with 2 1/2” exterior wood screws. I made six supports on the long sides and 4 on the ends. This is probably overkill, but I didn’t want it to be too flexible when I added 1/4″ of insulation on top.

Collect the base. To do this, I used leftover wood found in our yard and cut it to width on my table saw. But if you don’t want to do that, you can use 2×3 to make your base. The actual dimensions of a 2×3 are 1 1/2 inches thick x 2 1/2 inches wide. If you’re using reclaimed wood, always double-check the metal before you run it through the saw.

Unique Pairings Of Materials Revolving Around Wood

I found nails in my restored tree. I’m glad I caught it before I ran it through my table saw.

After your pieces are cut to size, I assemble them using 1 1/2″ pocket screws and 2 1/2″ outside wood screws. I built wood. I did this now because once it’s in the frame it will be very difficult to get it out. If you are going to paint or wash the base, I recommend doing it now.

I love this reclaimed wood. I think it’s great to reuse something that was going to the landfill.

Here I tested the framed base to see where I could attach myself when I skinned the frame.

Cut 1/4” of insulation to cover all six sides of the frame. If your table will stand inside, you don’t need to clean the bottom. But since mine was outside, I wanted to seal it in a box so no critters or spiders could get in there.

With large pieces like this, I like to split them into smaller pieces with my circular saw before folding them to final dimensions on my table saw. And since my shop broke, my truck body with a piece of foam was perfect for that.

If you don’t have a table saw, you can also cut backing from big box stores.

Attach the 1/4″ brace to the frame. I use 1 1/4″ roofing nails. I was going to use screws… I thought I had them, but I didn’t… I used roofing nails I had on hand. Fingers crossed that the roofing nails don’t get in the way and get damaged. concrete. I figured nails are for streets and roofs should be fine. But if I had to do it again, I’d probably go out and buy screws.

I made sure the 1/4 inch panels were installed on each side. There are many supports we install to ensure that the 1/4″ panels do not bend once they are installed.

After all that, but the top panel was attached, I attached the frame to the base with 2 1/2″ external wood screws from the inside of the box and the frame. I measured and marked where the screw should be placed so as not to miss the base.

Mix Henry’s pen according to the instructions on the box. But mix in very small batches because it dries quickly…especially if you do it in the summer like I do. I tried to mix just enough and do one side at a time. I spread it over the face of the box with a dry knife, trying to keep it as smooth as possible. This is definitely an art and you will learn your skills with a little practice.

I also made sure I had a bucket of water handy to keep my drywall cutter clean during the process and between coats.

The spray paint bucket worked well because after the concrete dried I could easily remove the residue and reapply the next coat.

Below are some reminders of a small group of chess players. I didn’t do that here and ruined the concrete. The box says not to add water when it starts to dry, I didn’t.

Coat #4 is where I tried to fill in all the bumps. I sanded between the feathers to knock down any high spots. It also helps the next layer to proceed smoothly.

Below I didn’t like the lines/stripes I got so I applied a 5th coat on this side to cover some of it.

I’m not sure what I did differently on this side, but I ended up putting a fifth coat on it.

I use Thompson’s Water Seal to seal the concrete and wood foundation. It turns milky white and dries visibly. You will only need one coat of this product. You also don’t want to apply it too thick or it might stick. When it’s dry for 24 hours, I water test it…if it shows, I don’t need another coat. But if water gets into the piece, I know my piece needs a second coat.

At first I tried to roll it on, but since the finish is very thin, I quickly switched to a brush and applied another one.

See concrete come to life. I love that you can see the layers of concrete and the different colors it creates. I feel good knowing that this table will be protected from any water damage.

I really like how this piece turned out. I finally have the concrete coffee table I’ve been wanting. Thanks again to Thompson’s Water Seal for supporting this project. I hope you enjoyed this project as much as I did, and if you try to make your own, I’d love to see a picture!

This instructable explains how I made two identical tables out of concrete and cedar planks. This building probably isn’t for those who want to try their first project, but you certainly don’t have to be Norm Abram to complete it. It’s a fun project that involves a variety of materials (wood, concrete, metal) and, in comparison, can be very quick. I learned a few things along the way, made a few mistakes, but overall I’m very happy with the final product and hopefully I can help you learn from my mistakes. Let’s get started.
