Here is a photo of the couch side of the room today. I will take a picture of the whole room when I do a full tour of the family room soon.
Let’s start. The dimensions in my tutorial are for a table measuring 32.5 inches high x 78 inches wide x 12 inches. You can create any size chart that meets your needs and adjust according to your cut dimensions.
You’ll also need: a stain of your choice (I used Minwax Special Walnut), a spirit level, a drill or screwdriver, a saw (or ask the store to cut the wood to size for you), wood Glue, a clamp or two and a wooden dowel.

How To Build A Modern Sliding Sofa Side Table
Remember – safety first! Protect your eyes when sawing wood. You may also want to wear earplugs to protect your ears from the sound of the lake and a respirator to avoid inhaling the wash.
Step 1 – Stain each piece of wood and allow to dry. I stained most of my wood on the front and back, but there were a few pieces that I didn’t stain until the table was completely assembled.
Step 2 – Make the legs for the table by cutting six 2×4s to 31.75 inches long. Lay the three pieces of lumber aside and run a drop of wood glue underneath to hold them together. Make sure the legs are straight and glue the wood pieces together on top of the head and let the glue dry according to the directions on the glue bottle.

In this photo you can see two sets of legs, one for each end of the table, that have been painted and glued.
Step 3 – Attach a flat metal bracket to the inside of each leg with wood screws. Make sure the screws are not so long that they go all the way through the wood. This gives extra stability to the legs.
Step 4 – Lay the long 1×12 board upside down and attach each leg to the end with L-shaped corner brackets and wood screws. Position the brackets so that there is room to add a center bracket. I set each of my legs 1.5 inches from the end of the board. Remember to rotate the legs so that the side of the legs with the flat stitches is facing. Make sure the wood screws are small enough that they don’t go all the way through the wood.

Step 5 – There are two intermediate brackets. Cut each of the remaining 2×4s to fit between the insides of the legs. The first clamp goes under the table, to the underside of the blade. Place the bracket in the middle of the table. Lay the 2×4 on its side and secure it with two wood screws that go into the frame on the outside of the table legs.

Step 6 – Attach the second bracket to the bottom. Cut the last remaining 2×4 to fit between the legs. Use a level to make sure the bracket is level from side to side and secure with wood screws that go into the end of the bracket on the outside of the legs.

Step 7 – Apply stain to remaining surfaces and allow to dry. I also brushed the stain onto the metal pieces to double them up a bit. I chose not to apply polyurethane to the table after staining, but it’s definitely something you can do.
I love the addition of the sofa table in our family room. Now the whole room feels comfortable and inviting as it should be!

I started taking things off the wall and rearranging things for them. So I found a nice big window for the area, put my nice yellow sheet over it and tried to do my current cabinet, but it looked bad. So I searched town and online for a coffee table that would match the room. Found a few, but they all seem to be $100+ or the wrong size or the wrong color. So I decided I would make a table instead. Usually I design the furniture and then my husband and I build it together. Well, this time I decided that I would try to make it myself, and I did! I made this table 100% myself :). If I can do it, so can you, especially when I give you step-by-step instructions.

So here’s the room before it freaked me out and I decided to break it on some random day 🙂
I started with a 2x8x8ft piece of lumber and cut it in half to 48. I have a marine saw to do this.
To hold the two boards together I used a flat clamp and nailed it to the wooden support.

Now for the legs. I first determined how far inward I wanted the legs from the top. I finished the legs 2″ from the sides and 3/4″ front and back. I used some 2×2 lumber to give the legs more support (and it looks good too). So I cut two pieces of 2×2 lumber 26″ and then 2 pieces of 2×2 lumber 10″. Then I cut 4 pieces of 2×4 lumber 27.5″ (which will be the legs) I put them all on the end of the table. Leave before I start digging. I marked with a pencil where they should go and when I had everything. With my measurements and wood in place I started nailing the wood to the table top with a nail gun. For the 2×2 lumber I used 1 1/2 inch nails.
For extra support I used some L brackets and nailed them to the legs and then to the underside of the table top.
Now for the shelf. I used a piece of chipboard for the shelf, but since it was thinner than the 2×2 and 2×4 lumber I used, I added some 3 to secure the 2×4 lumber to attach it. Used /4″ L brackets. Cut chipboard 10″ x 36″, 2x4s were 10″ and 2x2s were 36. I nailed the 2x2s directly to the storage board. Then I used three brackets on each side to hold the 2×4 wood, this is how it looks from the bottom.

I then nailed the shelf to the bottom of the legs. I used a piece of 2×4 to help balance and level me as I nailed it. I attached the shelf by nailing the legs to the 2×4 (which is attached to the shelf). As you can see in the picture I put about 5 nails in each leg to support the shelf. Then I put some nails into the 2×2 (which is attached to the shelf) and nailed them to attach the 2×2 to the legs. Once I got the shelter, I went back and put a few more nails in the whole thing, just for extra support. And now that the table is made, it’s time to paint and make it pretty!
I painted the whole first and then stained the table top with espresso paint. I brushed it off and then wiped off the excess stain with a cloth. Before I started painting the legs, I used some wood filler and filled the holes from all the nails that I put in the table.
Then I glued the sofa table on top and then sanded and primed the legs and shelf. Then I applied two coats of white paint. I also painted the lower part of the table top
