Although the chair was a little beat up, it was in very good condition. I mean, after all… they were going to the pit!
All they needed was a good clean and a fresh coat of paint. I’m glad we were able to breathe new life into these old chairs and turn them into beautiful recycled benches for your yard.

For starters, you’ll also want the furniture to be clean. Especially if you’re using old furniture that was on its way to the trash like mine!
After I got them for free from someone on Facebook, they sat in our garage for a few months until I had time to tackle a DIY bench seat.

This will remove any residue and/or finish on the seats currently and give the exterior paint something to go with.
You can use a slightly damp cloth or a lint-free cloth. I like sanding cloths because they are less sticky and catch all the sanding dust.
Now, our repurposed furniture bench protrudes from our balcony, so I decided to go with a premium exterior paint to extend the life of the wooden outdoor furniture.

Sherwin Williams was kind enough to send me a clear acrylic exterior latex paint to try out for this project. The flexible lining offers exceptional moisture resistance, which is something I need as we live in winter and summer.

Exterior paint acts as a sealer for wood furniture, so it’s important to get it into all areas.
Also, don’t forget to draw the bottom of the seat and the bottom of the legs where the seat touches the floor!
Note: If you think your outdoor bench might be standing on water, you can also put a riser under the legs to keep it off the ground.

I did two coats of exterior paint. If I put it a little thicker, maybe I can leave one… but I like painting in lighter layers, even if it takes me longer. It can be a little white.
After applying the 2nd coat of exterior paint and waiting for it to dry, I love the color (refreshed by Sherwin Williams). But I was not happy with the way the chair looked.
My style is usually quiet and fun. I knew I couldn’t mess up the furniture like I usually do when I paint furniture. The exterior of the paint needs to be waterproof to prevent moisture on this outdoor bench, so I can’t sand it. I painted the furniture with white acrylic paint.

Dry brushing is an easy technique you can use to add a little character to painted furniture. Dry brushing is great for bringing out the look of furniture. They are easy to make!
You need to take an old brush and apply the paint, then often wipe the paint with a paper towel or cloth.
Then, gently run the brush on the furniture, touching it. Always fold the brush with the grain of the wood.

You can go back and add a clean look by dry brushing, so start small and be gentle with your brush.
If you end up with too much white in some areas, you can go back with the color of the exterior paint and paint it using a dry brush to reduce the white.
While the paint is drying, you can start working on the wooden boards. We always have a few pallets around our house because we use them all the time for DIY woodworking projects (we made our wooden bed!).

Once you have your pallet wood, you can measure the bench and, if necessary, cut the pieces to fit the bench.
We spaced our furniture slightly apart to fit the width of the pallet pieces so there was no undercutting.
I used the finish gun to attach the pallet boards to the bench seat. I added 2 nails to each plank of wood where the chair seat meets.

Be sure to leave small gaps between the pieces of wood so that water does not seep through and soak into the chair.
I also used a very white paint and a dry paint technique to add a more uniform look to the pallet wood!
I painted some extra pallet wood the same color as the furniture and nailed it to the bottom of the furniture as an extra beam.

Once the bench has the paint completely dry, you will want to seal this bench before going outside.
The exterior paint itself does not need to be sealed, but you do need to seal the pallet wood. I used an acrylic spray coat. Don’t forget to do the edges and the bottom too!
I think this repurposed bench seat would make a fun backyard party. We have plenty of summer to enjoy this bench before winter sets in.
