How To Build A Sewing Machine Table – I am very excited to show you my new sewing machine table that my husband and I made together. I love my new table and I love how cheap it was to make!
This is not our first attempt at making a table for a sewing machine. A few years ago I decided I wanted a table for my sewing machine that made the surface of the table even with the needle/neck of my sewing machine. Basically I wanted a uniform sewing surface. I also wanted it to be big enough to handle everything from Lindsay’s wristlet to a blanket. My husband (Brian) and I worked together to find an inexpensive solution.

The image above shows our solution. I can not remember now what we paid for the folding table and all the other “stuff” you see that raised the surface so it is level with my car, but it is not much. And it worked. . .

. . . At least it worked pretty well. My car has a knee lift which I like but every time I used a knee lift my car would change. I’m really used to putting my car back in place after every three or four leg lifts with knee lifts. It’s actually getting pretty annoying. Keeping my machine level with the foam to be level with the work surface also became quite annoying.
I kept looking at sewing cabinets that included a cutout to fit my sewing machine to level the sewing surface, but WOW – $500 minimum and another $75 for a custom insert to fit my machine. It has to be a more economical solution.

Palak links to two different blog posts that have more detailed instructions for building the sewing machine table. Brian used his blog posts and ingenuity to build my desk. I would recommend reading all three blog posts (Make It Handmade, Blue Dinosaurs and From Marta with Love) as each one has good ideas and suggestions.
When I make a bag, I usually have 2-3 different colors of yarn with a matching spool that I use. I only change my bobbin a lot when I sew a bag, so I need to be able to get to my bobbin easily. Brian and I came up with a solution so that I could easily change my bobbin without picking up my sewing machine off the table every time. Brian cut a slit from the table apron and the shelf my camera sits on. Now I can easily change the coil!
We had to make the hole for the knee riser a little bigger due to my measurement error. :

Brian would have liked the hole for my knee lift to be more centered, but it was my fault for deciding to help at that point and not marking the correct spot for the knee lift – ouch! I should have let him do it.
You can see the notch in the upper left corner of the picture. (You can also see the detail of the stencil I added to the corner of the board.)
To make it easier to connect/disconnect my sewing machine and turn it off and on, Brian added a slot to the custom cutout for my machine.

After Brian finished all the trim work and custom shelving, it was up to me to finish it off with paint or stain. I decided to paint the table – I love stained wood, but I could not resist and had to add a painted stencil detail.
I bought the stain I used from Home Depot. I used Minwax Wood Finish Stain in the color, Special Walnut. I bought all my stenciling supplies at my local Joan’s. I used Martha Stewart’s Exotic Blossoms Silk Screen with Cascade Art Polk Chalk Paint. I also bought the Martha Stewart Stencil Brush Set to apply the color.
I must say that when I bought the silk stencil I thought it was just a regular stencil, but to get all the details in the design center, it is actually a silk stencil. I mention this because if I had paid more attention to this fact, I would also have noticed that it is suggested to use a squeegee to apply the paint.

I have found that I have no problem spreading the paint with a stencil brush by both pushing and pulling the brush to get the paint where it needs to go through the silk screen. I also had a lot of paint on my stencil brush, not the almost dry stencil brush I’m used to. All the explanation of the boilerplate may make it seem difficult, but it is not at all – it takes some getting used to, but it is very easy!
Screen printing stencils are more flexible than regular stencils and have a light adhesive on the back, making it easier to stencil over the edge of the table to the corners of the table legs. A word of caution, when peeling off the stencils for screen printing, do it very, very slowly! If you peel it too fast, some of the little details will come off – I ruined one of the small designs on the back peel too fast.
I used Folk Art Home Decor Wax in Clear to protect and seal my table. The whole project took a little over a weekend to complete, mostly because of the time I gave the stain, chalk paint and wax to dry.

Brian had to add one final custom feature – a side mounted power strip! Now I don’t have to crawl under the table to set up the iron and I can put several things on at once! We spent just under $200 on this whole project and it’s a table that fits my sewing machine perfectly and is custom made to work the way I use my sewing machine. For me it is unpleasant!
