How To Make A Chair Out Of A Car Seat

How To Make A Chair Out Of A Car Seat – Did you know that every year on Friday, September 3rd, cities around the world turn their metered parking lots into parks for the day? The global movement is called Park(Yen) Day, and anyone from the participating cities can save a place where it can be turned into a small park. It’s worth checking out some of the parks from last year’s Park(Yen) Day!

As you may have guessed, this September 15th, two men and a truck will be making “Parlette” and you can find us in the Gulch in front of E. Allen’s Boutique and Bar Louie. Like many organizations, our park will have an eco-friendly theme…we plan to build our entire park out of cardboard boxes! Our ground cover, planters and park benches are made from recycled cardboard office boxes. And you’re probably wondering how you can make a sturdy bench out of a cardboard box?

Each flattened moving box can be separated into a flat piece with a seam in one corner. Once you have completely disassembled the box, you can cut the top and side edges to adjust the final size of the seat. Our chairs are about 1.5 feet tall, the big boxes are about 5 feet long each, but you can adjust these measurements to your liking. Be sure to use the folded corners of the boxes to your advantage by keeping each folded corner parallel to the two cut edges of the box surface.

Designing A Functional Cardboard Chair

You will cut a total of 8 slots that will allow the two parts to join together.

The red spaces in the photo above show how the center cut was made. On the first piece of cardboard, find the midpoint of the two terminal triangles and cut from the midpoint to the top edge. On the second piece, cut it from the center of the two triangle ends to the bottom edge

The final blue cut should also be made in three-dimensional sections. The most triples on the left should be cut from the bottom edge to the center of the piece, and the most triples on the right should be cut from the top edge to the center. We placed this blue cut about 3 inches from the edge of each piece of cardboard.

You can combine the two blue kits to secure the triangular pieces. You have now made the sides of your chair!

Now you can use the red slots to attach the side frame of the chair and provide stability for the person sitting in the chair. To increase the comfort level of the “sitter”, we put some cardboard in the central square.

It’s almost over! Now it’s time to take apart your medium box the same way you did the large boxes. Cut one of the four folding sections and place it on the side of the seat to determine how big the top should be. Cut it to size to make a rectangle whose four corners match the four outer corners of the seat (see the green mark in the image above).

Use the orange marks in the photo above to note how to make a split from the top and bottom edges of the seat to the corner point of the seat frame. These slots allow you to make triangles on the sides of the seat and attach the top. To complete the session, you must make your fold signals using the purple dashed lines.

You can use a slightly damp cloth or cloth. I like cloth bags because they are a little sticky and absorb all the sand dust right away.

Now our reclaimed bench seat is in our yard, so I decided to choose a high quality exterior paint to extend the life of the wood patio furniture.

Sherwin Williams kindly sent me some fancy exterior acrylic latex paint to try out on this project. The resistance range offers exceptional moisture resistance, which I really need since we live in a climate with harsh winters and sunny summers.

I used a brush to apply the paint, but you can also use a spray paint gun if you have one to make this DIY bench project even faster.

As I mentioned in the video below, when painting outdoor furniture, think about covering the furniture as a whole, not just the wood where you can see it.

Exterior paint acts as a sealant for wood furniture, so it’s important to get it into every nook and cranny.

Also, don’t forget to paint the bottom of the seats and even the bottom of the legs, where the seat touches the ground!

Note: If you think your outdoor bench can sit on stilts, you can attach some risers under the legs so it doesn’t sit directly on the ground.

I did two coats of exterior paint. If I put it on a little thicker, I might have gotten away with making one… but I tend to paint in lighter layers, even if it takes a little longer. It will finally get better.

After applying 2 coats of exterior paint and waiting for them to dry, I loved the color (which was a Sherwin Williams refresh by the way). But I just didn’t like the seat bench.

My style is generally a bit more subdued and farmhouse. I knew I couldn’t paint the chair like I usually paint the furniture. The outer layers of paint need to stay on to provide moisture protection for this outdoor bench, so I definitely can’t do them. Finally, I painted the squares with white acrylic craft paint.
