How To Make A Giant Bean Bag Chair

I’ll show you what you need, where to find it, and how to put it together so your awesome bean bag will last for years and years!

1. MEASURE AND CUT THE RING. Starting with the material you have inserted, cut two circles 170 inches from the circle. I fold my fabric enough around itself to do 2 cuts at once.

The easiest way to measure is to use the radius of the circle, which is 27. Cut a string about 40 inches long and tie one end to a pencil or straight pin. This will be your pivot point.

Tie the other end with a piece of chalk or fabric pencil, so that the string is 27 inches straight from the tied point to the knot. Find the closest spot on the fabric where you will draw your circle and place the pivot point there. Stretch the string until it is taut, then use chalk to draw a perfect circle. Cut out both circles.

2. Measure and cut rectangles. Measure and cut two rectangles 87″ long and 32″ wide from each type of fabric.

3. Sew ONE END of the rectangle TOGETHER. Align the sides together, join the two rectangles on the short side (32″) and sew. You will now have one long rectangle that is 32″ w x 170+” long. To do this.. any type of fabric.

4. Pin the circle to make a rectangle and sew in place. With right sides together, place the circle on the long side of the rectangle. Sew in place with a 1/4-1/2 inch seam allowance (depending on your fabric/sewing machine. Heavier fabrics will need a larger seam allowance but if you have chain 1/4 inch will be too tight).

After attaching the last short ends of the rectangle (right sides together) to the first circle, sew to make sure everything fits.

5. OPEN THE SLIDE AND THE BOTTOM SEAM*. Right sides together, push the second circle to the bottom of the rectangle, leaving room for the length of the zipper. Fasten the zipper in place. (I have zipper instructions HERE for steps 6-12 of my T-Shirt Pillow tutorial).

*Additional zipper is optional. You can leave a gap of 2-3 meters to fill the insert with foam, so you can close it.

6. Fill the foam. It is in your best interest to follow my next recommendations carefully! Place the foam in the package before opening and allow it to drain. It will expand like crazy and the foam has static electricity so it sticks to everything. Once it’s installed, pin it and sew it up! (Or if you unzipped them, install them!)

7. CONTENT. This is where you will be happy if you buy mondo-big-o zippers. Once you’re in, press it and you’re done!

1. Cut two pieces of fabric 45″ x 32″. The pieces can be identical, or you can choose a pattern to coordinate the two-tone look.

2. Turn right together. Use a zigzag stitch to prevent fraying on long, raw edges. Then sew the same edges straight. Due to the high abuse of these stitches, I recommend using a small length for long periods of time.

5. Open the fabric in the back and you should have a nice even curve on one side. Zigzag the raw edge and use the straight stitch again to close.

6. Open the remaining unstitched edge. Keeping right sides together, fold in half on opposite side as shown below.

7. Sew a 22″ zipper down the center of this opening. I used an invisible zipper so it wouldn’t show too much when it was done.

9. Turn the bean bag chair right side out and fill it with beans! This child seat directly fills one bean bag to create the perfect fill (3.5 cubic feet or 100 liters). There’s no easy way to get those crazy little pellets to stick without wasting a few. My best tip is to have two people hold the zipper open and a third person pour – oh, keep some cleaner on standby!

Using two different materials means the bean bag chair is reversible. Just turn it over and create a whole new atmosphere – it’s two chairs in one!
