Tree stumps are popular tables in many homes because of their simple looks and natural elements. Many people still chop wood for their fireplaces to heat their homes. And they will use the logs as coffee tables.

If you want to create this look without having access to your own land, you can always go to your local lumber yard.

If you treat your logs properly, you won’t have to worry about pests and insects infesting your home.

The best way to treat tree trunks is to let them dry completely first. If you use freshly cut wood, it can last up to six months.

Another factor to consider is the type of wood you use for your log. Some woods break faster than others. So, if you want a long-lasting, preserved log, these are the best wood types for coffee tables:

Start by preparing the luggage. Cut with a chainsaw if necessary. And remove excess bark if desired (the trunk we used was already bare, attacked by an ash borer before cutting).

If you don’t want to cut down a tree, you can find stumps of fallen and broken trees.

Diy Tree Stump Side Table

Welcome to week two of my One Room Challenge! Last week I unveiled my High Style, Low Budget Sunroom Design Plan. Here is a brief summary of my mood board.

How To Make A Tree Trunk Table

I was planning to do a few DIY projects for this space and finished the first one yesterday! I had originally planned to make a coffee table out of scrap wood and leather, but that was before I found these logs in the lobby of an antique shop.

I often go to Celia’s Antiques in Storm Lake, Iowa. Owner Celia is a cheerful and friendly woman who always wears a pair of oversized overalls and has the skills to style her unique antique collection. These two logs were in the lobby and I “up the wall” to ask them how much they wanted. His definitive, surprised response was: “Do you like roots?!?!” I told him yes, “I like logs” and I want to buy them. He said I could have it if I wanted it! I can’t leave him!

Then I came back with my wife and ready to load up our Honda CRV and do some magic. Celia gave me a small wheelbarrow to put them in and she sent me home to get them out!

We stopped at Rent-All in Storm Lake so we could borrow a grinder on the way home. (I don’t have any tools to be honest, but I’m hoping to get some now as I’ve discovered plenty of project love!)

I asked him if he knew how to fix the uneven log, and she got out of the car to check. She said it was easy enough with the chainsaw and they straightened it that afternoon!

Here are some pictures of my process. This is a beginner project and using this hand sander is actually my first time using a power tool!

This photo was taken after the left stump was completed and before the other stump started. The poly gave it a really nice high-end finish while retaining its organic, log-like properties.

To create the felt base, I draped my felt garden over the log and roughly cut a 1-inch-diameter piece smaller than the sides of the log.

I nailed the furniture runners and attached the edges of the felt with small nails. (sorry I forgot to take a photo of this step!)

I don’t have a picture of the finished logs because they’re still in my garage and it’s raining right now! I can’t wait to see them compete on their new journey as a coffee table in my sunroom.

This project took me two afternoons (about 7-8 hours total) and about $35-40 material. (I bought a 50-gallon polyester but only used 1/4 of it, averaging $12.)

A stubby coffee table, here are some options. First, I wish you the best of luck in getting a coffee table loan approved, and second, let me take a step back so you don’t accidentally laugh in your face at how expensive they are.

5. $120 Amazon Teak Reclaimed Log or Stool (Here’s the regular human option if you really like the look, but remember it’s only 30 inches wide and about 16 inches tall!)
