After an introduction to safety – in the forest, in the store and in your products – and an overview of the different styles of wooden furniture, the book takes you directly to the forest.
There is more to finding wood than picking up fallen limbs or cutting down trees. Alan gives tips on where, when and how to find the best specimens to build your timber furniture, and which trees to remove. Before you get down to work, to create rustic wooden furniture, you must first learn to join wood and boards well, but the pieces will be held together with the rigor of use. Allen explains things like pegs, dowels, nails (and why not to use them), nail guns, screws, bolts, and nuts to join wood depending on the application. In addition to useful helpers to hide errors, it provides some methods for each method.
Chapter 15 discusses finishing methods for your project: HVLP spray, aerosol, or brush. Allen said: “It’s a good thing to have a separate finish booth at best. Something with good lighting and an air filter and exhaust system.” But instead, there are other options to protect your job.
Investing in a portable wood saw like Wood-Maser can really make life easier when it comes to cutting planks out of wood. But if you don’t have the room or money for that size of device, Alan offers a few ways around it.

As Alan said, “Tools are expensive, but doing the impossible.” He recommends saving money by buying used big-ticket items, looking for auctions, moving sales and estate sales. Other tools you’ll need to have ready for making rustic furniture:
• Drilling Points – Almost all connections require holes. Allen prefers a Forstner drill bit to make clean holes with a shallow pilot. • Clamps – Not required and you need different sizes.
• Putty Knife – Alan uses a “low putty knife” to peel the logs. “A good putty knife will be your best friend when working with logs. Trust me on that,” he said.

• Surface Planer – Take rough cut boards and turn them into beautiful wood. “I would be lost without my landscaper,” Allen says.
• Joints – Allen used 6 inch joints that he got at auction for $25 to attach the edges of the beams and boards.
• Rectangle drill – “A right-angle drill is an investment in your health,” says Allen, adding that you may have twisted wrists while using the drill. The rectangular version gives you a long handle that tames all that power when you’re digging big holes or cutting with a bag.
From Tree To Table: How To Make Your Own Rustic Log Furniture
• Miter Saw – A good 12-inch model can cut a good-sized log in one clean cut. Perfect for cutting the stem lengthwise, stripping the ends or shaving another 1/4 inch off the burr.
• Radial Arm Saw – Allen created the 1983 Radial Arm Saw and Surface Paint “Wood Grinder”.
• Chainsaws – 12″ to 15″ chainsaws are good for cutting trees and cutting logs. If you are cutting wood or trees for a portable band saw, you will need a larger model.
Hand Crafted Log Chairs And Benches
• Protractor – Helps to slightly angle the legs when making sofas and chairs. A protractor is a huge time saver when repeating the same angle from foot to foot.
Large clamps can mislead the spines into moving the pieces when they are tight. After drawing, it can be used to open the pieces.
Next, Allen discusses glue, sanding, and work surfaces before getting a brief overview of the basics of furniture making. It includes a list of common sizes — or “acceptable industry standards” — for dining room tables, end tables, coffee tables and hall tables.

The last part of the book is dedicated to real furniture projects and instructions. The previous material gives you a general foundation to build on; It’s time to make items! Alan starts with a simple slat sofa (“basic furniture”) which offers two options for construction. Other projects include: rustic shaped mirrors, coat racks (standing versions and wall mounted styles), tables, chairs, wooden lamps, blankets or rugs and beds.
Allen started the table by assembling boards or boards long enough for the project.
