How To Make Table And Chairs Out Of Pallets
The table comes with two chairs and is made from unfinished pine, perfect for painting without the need for sanding or priming. The top, however, is plastic coated MDF, so it needs to be primed before doing anything else. I used the Rustoleum Plastic Primer you just sprayed on and applied two coats to completely cover the top. Make sure you do it outside because it really stinks. Next, it’s time to paint the table and chairs. I decided to use Farrow & Ball Sulking Room Pink for the table and Farrow & Ball Railings for the chairs, which I hoped would create a nice contrast between the two. I have matching colors from Decorating Center Online that I have used before and would highly recommend as the quality is excellent and you will save a fortune. Even better if you order a test pot, it comes in these huge tins which are more than enough for two layers – an absolute steal at £3.75 each.

Before you start, make sure the plastic top is taped over to protect it from paint – I used B&Q’s Frog Tape, a little more expensive than painter’s tape, but definitely worth it, as I think the tape is inferior in quality. work doesn’t always work either.
I also decided that I wanted the legs to look “recessed” so I glued 10 cm of the bottom of the table and chair legs and painted them with Rust-Oleum Gold metal furniture paint.
Next: paint the plastic surface with two coats of Wilko Chalkboard Paint! I had never painted with chalkboard paint before, but I was amazed at how easy it was to apply. This time, don’t forget to tape the tree to protect it from the black paint.

Lastly, I wanted to add comfortable seat covers. In hindsight, maybe I should have done this before assembling the chairs, but I was afraid that the paint would get on the fabric, so I decided to do it at the end when I assembled the chairs. This is where I got a little lost! Turns out expanding the seat with foam means you can’t get your hips together, so I had to make last-minute changes and ditch the foam. However, I still wanted to keep the cute Dalmatian pattern on the seat, so I simply attached the fabric (cut into two 50cm x 50cm squares) to the plastic part of the seat and reassembled. Too bad there’s no foam to make the seats a little more comfortable, but you can always add a cushion on top if you like.
And everything is ready! And, as you can see, it’s already a thunderstorm! Good thing I have plenty of chalkboard paint left, which means I can always paint it over if it gets really dirty.

Before determining how short a table is, it must be assembled (if not already assembled). This will show you the total height of the existing table.

Since I had our old children’s table handy, I could see the difference in height between the two tables. I decided that I needed to cut off 6-1/4 inches from the new table legs.

One thing about hand saw cutting is not the amount of pressure you apply. My hand saw gets harder to use the harder I push. Instead, I cut quickly and let the saw do its job.

The cuts on the legs were slightly rough. To smooth and round them a bit, I sanded them down with 220 grit sandpaper.
To keep the table from slipping all over the place when my kids lean on it, I added non-slip pads to the bottom of the legs. It also compensates for any difference in leg height if it’s light enough.
I tried to find two extra chairs to match our existing high chairs but couldn’t. Instead, I bought four new black metal highchairs.
