How To Make Chair Back Covers – Eh!!! I’m feeling a bit of a splurge, but I’m stoked to have finished the third chair for the chair cover! I started approx. 2 weeks ago (unfortunately) but I’ve been busy sanding and painting our table and helping Alex redo the bathroom. So when I started on Chair 3, I felt pretty confident about the steps and decided to take pictures as I made the cover to share.
Before I start, I should mention that I had to cut 2 pieces of fabric. I learned after the first chair that I cut too many pieces and it got complicated. All you need is 2 pieces of fabric! I got a linen look fabric from Joanne for $3.99 a piece. yard (she also had a 40% off coupon so make $2.39 for woot yard!). Here we go!
How To Make Chair Back Covers
First, cut a piece of fabric to cover the front and back of the chair back (so the fabric folds). Then sew the sides together, stopping where the back of the chair meets the seat. I tried to illustrate it by pinning the pages so that this was the inside of the cover

Second, once the sides are sewn, pinch to make a corner for the top chair (it looks like a little triangle). Make sure you sew a smaller corner than you think, so it’s easier to adjust after sewing, rather than removing the seam and starting over.
This is where the tricky part begins. So, since we are only working with 2 pieces of fabric, leave the back of the chair intact, but cut the fabric on the front of the chair to finish it on the seat.
Here’s what that piece looks like on the outside of the chair (you can see in the photo that I left the back intact and cut the front).

This is the rest of the seat fabric. I cut a small rectangle in the center of the fabric, half the depth of the back of the chair.
This is what the rectangle is for, it will line up where the back of the chair and the seat meet and the back of the chair will be gathered to match the back of the chair (first fabric sewn).
Here the back of the chair is returned to the chair seat fabric for sewing. Line up the edges of the fabric and pin them together to make sewing easier.

The part where the sides are against the seat is very difficult to sew. Hold the pins in place and slowly take the angle.
After you have sewn the right side and turned it over, the corner should look like this. This is definitely the hardest part to fit and sew. It took me until the third chair to get the hang of it, but once you put the cover on, the chair is perfect!
Now the front edges, turn the lid inside out so that all the seams are exposed. Then pin where your corners are and cut off the excess fabric.

Once you’ve sewn the front corners, you’re ready for the bottom! First, make sure you cut the bottom so it’s flush with the bottom of the seat. Then hit it down about half an inch. Here is the back end of a cover…
Now you must have a chair cover! I’ve done 3 so far, it really does get easier as you go along. I have 3 left, so add prints to the back of the chair! Sew fabric panels that mimic the shape of chair backs to reduce the amount of wood in a room or for special occasions. Follow these instructions step by step.
1. Lay the newspaper on a flat cloth, then place the back of the chair as flat as possible on the paper. Use a marker to trace the outside of the chair back, then cut out the pattern.

2. Fold the fabric in half with right sides together to get two pieces at once and fix the pattern. Cut around, making sure to leave a 1/2 inch seam all the way around.
3. Cut 14 strips of tape for each chair with approx. 10 inches apart. Pin and place on the right (not outside) side of the fabric in seven places. Pin the other half of the panel to the top with right sides together and sew around the panel, leaving about six to eight inches open at the bottom edge. Trim the seam allowance about 1/4 inch and around the bends, then turn the panel right side out. flat iron
4. Hand sew the opening closed and sew another panel in the same manner to complete the chair back cover. Connect them with bows.
