How To Make A Curved Chair Back – Season 11 of Builders Challenge is a little different from other seasons… This time there is no plan to participate, just a theme! Subject – something you can sit on. So I made a chair! That folding plywood chair!

How To Make A Curved Chair Back
To do this, I use a great new tool called Original Shaper. But it can also be done with old-school tools.
Curved Plywood Chair — 3×3 Custom
This binding sheet will be the key to all of this… I was able to find a 4×4 sheet from a big box store and have it shipped to my house.
But this chair requires a larger blade than a 4×4…I can find it at my local wood dealer.
It depends on a few different names where you get it from. It can be called a rocking board, bendy board, column rap, or barrel rap….
Body Dining Chair
My place is called a barrel wrap, because the column wrap will stop again.
I used glue that has an extended opening time because I know this operation will take me a while.
I glued the top of the first two sheets, then put the last sheet on top without the glue.
Build A Classic Adirondack Chair
Before applying the glue, I marked a center line on the sheet and shape, this allowed me to lift everything up so I could lock it all in place.
After the blades were in position, I added a bunch of ratchet straps to clamp all the blades together and hold them all together.
I put contact cement on the back of the skin and on the inside edge of the seat.
Grey Velvet Dining Chair
Once they are both dry, I tuck the veneer inside the pit, making sure to use pressure to make sure it adheres well and there are no air bubbles.
I then worked on making the actual seat for the chair by gluing the butternut panel.
Once dry, I made an MDF template for the inside of the seat and cut it 1/2″ wide as it would fit in the groove of the seat.
St. Barts Chair In Rose
I put a scrap piece of curved plywood with double sided tape on the seat to use as a guide for my router.
I glue the seat into the groove, but just for the seat, make sure you leave some space on the back of the seat to expand and contract the seat.
That way, the seat will stay forward, but the back of the seat will have room to move.
Woven Leather Wishbone Dining Chair
I put painters tape on the seams behind the veneers just to hold them in place.
This veneer tape has an adhesive that activates when you get wet, it shrinks slightly to hold the seams together.
Once the veneer tape is applied, you can flip it over and remove the painter’s tape from the flower side of the sheet.

Well… it works fine. This is not good. I will definitely use a vacuum press the next time I use a thin raw veneer like this.
And a piece of double-sided plywood tape on the outer curve is used as a guide for the circular saw to cut to the final height. This is a carousel with a large image and a small image below. Select one of the image buttons to replace the original image above. The main image is also a button that opens a larger image within the module and carousel.

I commissioned two chairs from my mother’s dining room made with vintage mail bags. I learned a lot doing this DIY upholstery project myself, and I’m here to show you all how you can do a DIY project like this one too.

After that, my siblings and I had to leave our parents’ house. And there they were. Three single dining chairs without a table, they were old, outdated and out of style. None of us want them. So they got out and went to the back of the truck, taking it to the trunk.
And every time I saw my brothers go out of the way, I had this big lump in my throat and a stone in my stomach…
Curved Back Dining Chairs
It was my mother’s favorite piece of furniture that she loved and took care of every day. I can’t bear the thought of these pieces ending up on the ground. My sister saw my tears, pushed the car and we followed my brother…
At our trash and recycling bins, the rule is that you do not take anything with you while it is in the bin. We really have to get there fast and on time. I was very happy that we didn’t reach the trunk a minute late, I picked it up in a minute, my brother was the first to lift the seat into the container.
To replace my chair I used the Dutch mail bags (mail bags) that my friendly postman left at my door. He handed me a bag of old, very old bags.

Seat covers should be very durable and tear-resistant. Unless you plan to give your chair a facelift often, it really pays to use classy fabric upholstery to restore the seat and back of your chair.

Clothing stores and clothing stores generally have a good selection. But you can also use a sturdy fabric like wheat sack, drop cloth, denim, or like I did a vintage mail bag.
This is not the package used to deliver mail to your home, but it is the package used to collect mail from public mailboxes and deliver it to the distribution center. What you see here is an old mail bag that I have and plan to use on another chair.
The material of this old bag is a cross between very strong linen and soft jute. I imagine it’s like a fabric drop canvas.
