I also wanted to show you some painted wood pieces by Cindy Rast, owner of Reinvented Delaware. On her blog, she shares her painting techniques and really cool resources for customizing wooden furniture and home decor. Very encouraging!

Most of the wooden pieces I slipped into were open arm chairs called “French chairs”. It has padding on the seat, inner and outer back and armrests. Other parts are visible, including wooden legs, arms and wooden corner supports and top rails.

When designing these types of seat covers, you need to consider what areas need to be covered for the cover to work, what areas are best exposed, and what type of seal is needed to keep the cover in place.

For this antique French chair, I made a simple four-piece bracket that fits the contours of the chair and is easy to remove for washing. For my client: ties, straps, buttons, zippers, suspenders. Hidden velcro closure only.

What you won’t see is the most beautiful wooden train. It is hidden under a narrow box. Why didn’t I reveal this detail? Because when ties and straps are not an option, boxing is needed to connect the inner and outer spine.

Here is another French chair design. It has a solid back and seat with connected padding. There is no open space between the visible corner posts, the upper back and the seat. It is the only tree in the factory where the arms and legs are painted.

I made an easy to put on and take off one piece hood with button openings in the back corner and along the front sleeve. The deep connection that connects the inner back and seat does not slip during use.

French chairs are not the only type of furniture that reveals woodwork. The club chair below is a good example.

I ended up considering these pieces as I designed the wrist detail on the shirt. This inspired a short, top stitch that creates a pointed opening. Take a closer look below.

My client, Sarah, inherited this old, dark, beautiful French style chair (below) and decided to adapt it to her home decor.

He painted and distressed each piece of exposed wood and then made me apron style.

Believe in change?! I think Sarah told me that she played with different distressing techniques, combining 2 or 3 colors of paint to get this amazing result.

It was important to design an apron-style canopy to show off the beautiful details and color work. This type of cover uses strategically placed ties and straps to hold the canopy in place without shading the tree.

I’ve painted a few pieces of furniture over the years, but I don’t know enough about processes and colors, finishes and accessories to give you the advice you need. But I know someone who can.

Cindy at Reinvented Delaware salvages old wood furniture and restores it using a variety of restoration and restoration techniques, including different types of paint, finishes and distressing techniques.

This beautiful barrel chair is one of Cindy’s projects. This is a great example of how exposed wood can be painted and painstakingly accented with attractive carved details.

As you know, this type of chair looks like a good French chair if you have some ties or straps on the front wooden arms and fix the slide on the lower wooden rail.

Even if only the legs are exposed wood, you can dramatically change the look of an old piece. Cindy covered the bench (below) with cotton fabric and then painted the legs to coordinate with the print.

Slipcovers & Furniture Covers

Check out the carved wooden top rail on this Victorian chair. Cindy sanded to remove the original stain and found that the natural wood looked just as beautiful.

Stains that cannot be removed from his carvings highlight delicate details. This chair has no color. Rub it well with hemp polishing oil.
