Use a marker on the foam to mark the shape of your pillow. Carefully cut the lines with a serrated tool such as an electric carving knife. For best results, use a slow sawing speed and try to keep the blade as straight as possible.

Fold your fabric in half or place two layers on top of each other, wrong sides up. Place the foam on top and score around it. Using a ruler and rotary cutter or scissors, cut 1/2″ away from the tracing line for a seam allowance. Be sure to cut both layers, these are the top and bottom pieces of the pillow cover.

Cut a 4″ strip that runs along the front of the pillow cover. It should be as long as the long side of the pillow plus 1″ for seam allowance.

Cut the two short side pieces of the pillow cover. They should be 4″ taller and 3″ longer than the short sides of the pillow.

Fold one long edge of your backing 1/2″ to the wrong side and iron flat, then fold the other 1/2″ and iron. This should hide the raw edge. Sew along the folded edge to create a hem. Repeat on the other wing piece. Then repeat the process for the short side of the back wing. Your back flaps will now be folded on three sides. If you use a shower curtain hem, you only need to hem the short sides.

Align the back edge of the cushion cover with the raw edge of the back flap on the right side. Pin and sew with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Repeat along the bottom edge.

Turn the cover inside out and finish the raw seams with pinking shears, zigzag stitch or serger. Use the same technique on the side flaps or stop them for a more complete look.

Turn your pillow cover right side out and slide the foam inside. Cut the Velcro into several 5″ lengths. Starting in the middle of the cushion cover, pin each end of the Velcro to the back flap. Place one end of the Velcro on the outside of the bottom flap, close to the seam, and place. Another piece of Velcro on the back of the top cover, next to the curved edge. Repeat as needed depending on the length of your pillow cover.Carefully remove the foam and sew the velcro to the fabric.

Iron the pillow cover for the best beautiful edges. Slide the foam into the cover, fold the side flaps to the back edge and close the back flaps. Let me show you how to restore patio cushions quickly and easily!

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to restore patio pillows! First, lay your fabric on a flat surface, pattern side up, and place your patio cushion on it. Place your patio cushion in the top corner of the fabric, close to the top edge of the back of the cushion and leave enough room on the sides for the fabric to sit on the edge of the patio cushion. If your clothes are too loose or too long, cut them now. Just make sure there is enough fabric on both sides of your patio pillow (I left an extra three inches on each side).

Then pull your fabric up and over your patio cushion until it is completely covered. Your clothes will meet at the top. Leave another three centimeters of fabric at the top, then cut off more.

Once your fabric is in place on your patio pillow, pin both sides closed. If your pillow has a striped back like mine, I suggest you leave the last pin and mark in another way, such as a pin on both sides of the fabric where you have the pin (don’t close it) or a fabric marker.

How To Store Patio Cushions

In the photo above, you can see that I’m marking the narrow top with a pin, instead of pinning it together.

Now pull the material carefully. If the patio cushion is narrow in the back like mine and you have a hard time removing it, just tuck the patio cushion in a cloth like a tack and you will be able to remove it easily.

Sew both sides where you pinned it, then remove the pins. In the image below, you can see my dark lines.

How To Make A Chair Cushion

Next, place your patio cushion back into the fabric “envelope” you made (don’t let the fabric side out yet). Mark the extra fabric on each of the two front corners of your patio pillow. Pin the fabric together at the two corners so that it is tight against the pillow.

Remove the material from the pillow again and sew a line along the corner you pinned. Remove the beans.

Now turn your cloth inside out and place it on your pillow. In the photo below, you can see how I folded my patio pillow to fit the fabric envelope I made.

Press your patio cushions into the fabric. Look at the beautiful corner you have created!

Now fold the remaining fabric over the back of the patio pillow, like wrapping a gift. Put it in its place.
