How To Make A Simple Nightstand – Learn how to make this beautiful side table with lots of storage for your blankets, books or games.
I wanted to share a new side table project and I’m so happy with how it turned out! I’ve teamed up with my friends at Build Something to bring you printable plans for this project that you can download from their site. This side table has plenty of storage space and plenty of space to display your books or home accessories. Below I’m sharing a photo guide and I’ve also included a video of the entire build.
How To Make A Simple Nightstand
The beauty of making your own furniture is that it takes much less time to make than buying it. I recently talked about it and said that I make furniture that fits my focus. seriously! If a piece of furniture lasts you years, great! But if my taste suddenly changes and I decide to make something new for the room, it won’t break me like buying new furniture.
How To Build A Side Table With Storage
Another big advantage? If something needs to be fixed, you can fix it very easily. For example, let’s say your older son’s friend has locked himself under your younger son’s bed and decides to break down the door. You can fix it! Trust me, it helped me calm down when this happened. Imagine if I bought that captain’s bed and tried to find the door instead?!
I made this side table out of rough cut alder with knots. This meant I had to convert the wood to dimensional dimensions. I created the plans for this project to show the dimensional dimensions of the wood (for example: 2×2 is 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″) so that it is easy to follow.
When using knotty alder, this also meant that I had several large knots in the wood. I filled the epoxy with gray powder. It fills them better and gives them a fuller look.
How To Build Simple Wood Nightstands
You’ll want to build the side panels and shelves to start. Cut all wood to the dimensions shown on the printable plans. Drill 3/4″ pocket holes in the boards. Butt the joints and then secure with 1 1/4″ pocket screws. I cut the panel boards a little longer because it was hard to make sure they fit together perfectly. I used my adaptive cutting system to cut one edge and then cut the panel to size. I also made a shelf for the table using the same method.
Drill 3/4″ pocket holes on all four sides of the side panels and on each end of the shelf.
Drill 3/4″ pocket holes in the boards that make up the front back panel of the side table drawers.

With the panels, it’s time to assemble the base of the table. Drill 1 1/2″ pocket holes in the 17 1/2″ 2×2 pieces. Glue these pieces to the top and bottom edges of the side panels. Secure in place with 1 1/4″ pocket screws. Attach legs with wood glue and 2 1/2″ pocket screws, 1 1/4″ pocket screws where panels meet legs.
Attach the stretchers to the front and back of the table base 1 1/2″ above the bottom of the legs. Use wood glue and 1 1/4″ pocket screws to attach.
Glue and attach the solid back panel of the table. Secure with 1 1/4″ pocket screws.
Diy End Table With Shelves Building Plans Using Basic Tools!
For the table top, I cut 6/4 knotty alder to 5 1/2″ wide. 6/4 lumber is 1 1/2 inches thick, so cutting them 5 1/2 inches wide makes them the same as 1×6 boards. Again, I cut these boards into smaller lengths for later trimming. I glued the edges of the board together. Be careful not to overtighten the clamp when gluing the top to prevent buckling. I let the glue cure overnight and then cut the tabletop to size on my adaptive cutting system.
I used table fasteners to attach the table top to the base. I used three on each side and traced the short side with a pencil. Using a 3/4″ Forstner bit in my drill, I drilled a hole about 1/8″ deep. The fastener should be flush with the top of the base. I attached the fasteners using 1 1/4″ wood screws. I centered the table top on the base and then screwed it into place. I attached it to the other end of the fastener with 1 1/4″ wood screws.
I tore my 7 inch wide pieces of plywood and cut them to length on my miter saw. I drilled 3/4″ holes for the pockets in the front and back of the drawer box. I glued the pieces together and then secured them with 1 1/4″ screws. I cut 1/4″ plywood to match the dimensions of the drawer box, then attached it with wood glue and 3/4″ narrow crown staples. You can also use thick nails for this.
How To Make A Diy Nightstand
Install the drawer slides using the Kreg Drawer Slide Jig. For this table, place the drawer brackets on the bottom stretchers and fasten them in place. Drill 1/16″ pilot holes in the drawer sliding holes and attach with the screws provided.
For drawer cabinets, center the drawer slides on each side of the drawer cabinet. Drill the pilot holes and fasten with the included screws.
To attach the drawer fronts, use the Kreg Hardware Jig to drill the handle/pull holes that you will attach. Adjust the fixture so the location of the hole is flush with your hardware. Just drill a hole in the front of the drawer. Center the drawer fronts on top of the drawer cabinet. Playing cards with the goal of establishing the same space everywhere works best. Screw 1 1/4″ wood screws into the drawer box through the holes. Take the drawer out and drill pilot holes along the four corners inside the drawer box. Attach the drawer fronts with 1 1/4″ wood screws. Finish drilling the 3/16″ holes through the first two holes. Attach/pull the drawer handle.

You can complete this project however you want. I decided to leave it natural until I made a matching coffee table. I need some time to decide how I want to finish it.

Am I rushing this project a bit? Maybe I’m rambling a bit, but really, at the end of the day, I’m so happy to have the perfect wall in my bedroom to retreat from the chaos of life. Ah feeling good.
