Aren’t polka dots fun? So, the more I look at it, the more it reminds me of confetti. Polka dots or confetti, it doesn’t matter because they are both great.
How To Make A Burlap Table Runner
Dip a round brush in the paint, then wipe off the excess with a paper towel. Start with one color and place random dots on the burlap. There are no rules really. I like structure and order, but I still like how it happens, because random is difficult for me sometimes. You can make as many or as few points as you want. There are also round brushes in different sizes, so you can change the size too if you want.

I used wax paper under the burlap to catch the excess paint as there are large holes in the fabric. I taped in several places to keep the burlap on the wax paper. Let the paint dry for about an hour, then peel the wax paper off the back of the table runner. It is very easy.
This would be fun to make for a party or any holiday, just change the colors. It wouldn’t surprise me if I put out several runners in different colors on different occasions. Dots look great on table mats too.

I found this cute burlap with metallic gold polka dots and I love it so much I want to use it as my table runner! But I can’t justify paying $15 in the yard and $45 for burlap for a table runner.

So I decided to paint dots on it with regular burlap and gold paint. I thought I would save a ton of money and get the same look for less. Simple, right? Apparently not! I had no idea how difficult it would be to get the same metallic gold polka look with paint on burlap.
I must have tried every gold metallic paint available at our local craft store with no luck. As soon as I put metallic paint on the burlap, that metallic sheen is gone. It is always copper or dark yellow without a metallic feel.
So when I went to the craft store for the umpteenth time, I found some shiny metallic ribbon, ditched the paint method and decided to weave the ribbon through the burlap and it turned out awesome. I was initially disappointed that my first idea didn’t work out, but I’m excited about the end result. Today’s craft lesson: Maybe not what you first imagined, but maybe even better!

I love this DIY burlap table runner because it’s perfect for any holiday. I use gold tinsel ribbon for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but you can also use orange ribbon for Halloween or patriotic ribbon for the 4th of July. The options are endless!

1. Measure your table to determine the size of table runner you need. To give you a measurement guide, I added 2 feet to the length of the table and divided the width of the table by 3. You can make yours short or long or whatever size suits you and your desk.

2. Cut the burlap to the size you decided in step 1. It’s important to cut your burlap straight and in straight lines, so check out my tutorial on how to cut your burlap the right way to make sure you get a nice straight cut for your table runner.
3. Carefully remove several layers of burlap to add a fringe to the edge of the table runner. I would like to have one for my table runner
The edges were fringed, so I removed about 3 layers of burlap from the edges. If you want larger edges, remove more layers of burlap. If you don’t want edges, leave the edges alone. If you want a finished edge on your table runner, you can ditch the fray block and use iron tape or seal the edge underneath.

4. Following the directions on the Fray Block tube (or whatever anti-wrinkle product you’re using), apply it to the edge of the burlap. This will help keep the excess layers of burlap from automatically falling off. Let it dry.
5. Measure and mark where you want the ribbon to start on the table runner. To give you an idea of placement, I stretched my ribbon 1″ from the edge of the burlap, 3″ from the edge. Use your pen or marker
Draw a line the width of the ribbon at the end of the table runner. This is where you make the first cut.

6. Cut a slit in the burlap along the line you drew. Be careful to only cut ropes that go the length of your line.
7. Using your tape measure along the line you cut, continue to cut the slit along the same line in the burlap. I spaced my cuts so that my ribbon was 4″ above the burlap and 2.5″ below. It depends on how often the ribbon should be at the top and bottom of the burlap. Cut the slit along the entire length of the table runner and repeat on the other side.
8. Cut 2 strands of ribbon the same length as the table runner. Carefully thread the ribbon through the cutouts on the sides of the table runner. Tie a knot at the end of the ribbon at the bottom of the table runner to ensure they stay in place.

Isn’t she beautiful? I love the ribbon going through the table runner. It is a gorgeous shiny metallic gold that absorbs light beautifully.
I love that the gold ribbon is perfect for any holiday, but if I want to change it up, I can pull the ribbon out and weave in a new one. Perfect!

This table runner is so easy to make that you don’t even need to get out your sewing machine or iron.
First, measure the length of your table and how far you want your runners to hang from your table. Then, add your measurements together. My desk is 4 feet long and the runners have to hang one leg over the side of my desk. So my total length is 6 feet. Decide how wide you want your table runner to be. I decided that my foot should be wide.
Next, measure the length and width of the table runner. Before you cut your burlap, pull the string closest to your measurement and pull it through the weave of the burlap. This leaves a fine line for you to follow, so you don’t get bent!

Next, pull down the first 4 to 5 strands on each side of the burlap to create a fringe. This gives your table runner a seamless look.
