Two things can be a real problem when polishing. One is work stoppage and the other is dust. This simple vacuum table attaches to your vacuum to solve both problems.

I used an old printer cabinet as the main wooden desk table. There is a pocket where the printer used to sit. This will be the perfect place for the bottom table. For yours, consider building a box using the same process.

Start with the MDF. Place a grate on it and hit it. This is a 10 x 13 grid for 130 ¼ holes. It’s a good idea to ignore holes.

Cut a piece of plywood just the right size to cover all the holes in the perforated mesh. This is the floor of the vacuum chamber. Also cut the plywood strip wide enough to accept the vacuum hose fitting and the right length to attach to the side of the vacuum chamber. Using the butt joint as shown here will require you to cut these lines to the end of the side

You will notice that my sides are not high enough. It’s because I put down my pair of vacuum cleaners.

I was able to find two of my corner clamps so I could only clip two corners at a time. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Glue the two corners together and let them set. These will form the sides of the vacuum chamber. Glue the edges of the floor and fix the walls to the floor with wooden clamps. Apply caulk or construction adhesive inside the joints to seal the gap.

Since this uses ¼” plywood, it’s probably a good idea to make two support strips to run down the middle of the floor to keep it bent under the strong vacuum.

Cut a hole in the vacuum chamber of the appropriate size to accommodate the vacuum hose connector and glue the connector in place with construction adhesive.

Apply a generous amount of construction adhesive to all mating surfaces of the vacuum chamber and glue it to the top of the MDF. Place weights or, if desired, attach a vacuum hose and tie the holes to allow the vacuum to use the closing force.

When the glue dries, plug in the vacuum and try to sand something. Dust is no longer breathed in and the part stays securely in place. Building and maintaining a wooden boat involves a lot of sand and dust. I have an exhaust fan for the shop, a dust collector attached to my table and connector, and shop vacuum connections for the belt sander, disc sander, band saw, and sander orbital My latest addition to my arsenal of dusting tools is a shop-made table. It is convenient to dust to sand small parts by hand or with an orbital sander. There is nothing special in the box. I used 3/4″ spruce from old shelves and 3/8″ plywood for the top and bottom. Most tabletops I’ve found on the web have internal panels to attract loose particles to the cable connection, but with my shallow box I don’t think they would be very effective. The top is removable, so it’s easy enough to get in with a shop vac whenever it’s time to clean the inside.

The downdraft table must provide space for negative tears. The washer and 1/4 inch nylon arm spacer work for this table saw.

Studs fixed inside the box areas provide ledges for the plywood after it has been drilled into its holes. The top has a grid of 7/8″ holes drilled on 2″ centers; the bottom has a large hole to fit a proper hose dust collector and a second small hole to fit a shop vacuum hose. The bottom is glued and nailed in place. The regular dust collector does the job while the lower table is in the shop, and I’ll take the table and vacuum to do work elsewhere. A foam plug seals the remaining hole.

I had to drill an extra hole in each of the fence rails to support the bottom table. Your table may require different modifications.

Additional pieces of plywood reinforce the hole areas for the shop vacuum and dust hoses. Typically, a foam plug keeps the shop vacuum vent closed.

The dust collector is attached to the back of the drop table, the vacuum charger to the front. We use a shop vacuum if we remove the bottom table to work off the shop table; Its hole is sealed when the dust collector is in use. The box is shallow enough to keep clearance for the table saw’s pressure control.

The supports are useful to prevent the part from drifting during sanding. These are short 1 inch dowel sections with one end cut to fit the 7/8 inch holes in the table top. A piece of paper draped over the drop zone of the table increases airflow through the room.

A box fan with a 20″ x 20″ furnace filter will attract stray particles. Your own air is all you need to keep the filter in place. Keep the fan running whenever dusty work is being done in the workshop and it will recirculate the air and collect dust.

The downdraft table does not interfere with the operation of the table saw. The wall slides over and I have enough room below to adjust the pegs without breaking my knuckles. The extra surface supports tab pieces on the right side of the blade and provides a place to organize sticks, pencils and measuring tools. The downstream table helps ensure that what goes in the store stays in the store.

I modified it to include the bottom bounding box and added the T-track to the end of the assembly. The base is 2×8 and 4×4 milled and stained with a black deck stain. I kept my pliers under the table. Wheels are used to move it. It has an adjustable height so you can use it as a nesting table or raise it up for a more comfortable collection height. I used a hydraulic lift table to raise it up and down and hold it in place with screws through the legs.
