However, here are some projects I want to share with you. One such project is my wooden rocking chair. We found this chair on CraigsList before my son Zach was born. Later, I put a blue rocking chair cushion in there and called it a day. He was never polite enough to ease the 3am load on my aching body, so I vowed that this time would be different.

I started with 2 1/2 feet of 2 inch foam board from the fabric store. Using a large piece of kraft paper (a sheet of newspaper will also work), I outlined the seat of the chair. Then I used that as a pattern to cut the foam padding for the seat. The dress is so soft that it can be cut with scissors. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect, because it will cover the seat.

Then I pushed the rest of the foam into the back of the chair so I could measure the back cushion. Using a marker, I drew a rough line along the edges.

I cut the foam into lines. Then I turned the chair and marked the height of the foam on the back. I want my foam to be a little higher than the actual seat back. I also marked on the edges of the foam.

I cut the top of the sponge into a belt shape to resemble the natural lines of the chair. After cutting it out, I covered it with fabric to see how it would look when draped.

I decided I wanted to round out the belt a little so I cut foam wedges to add to the belt and covered those pieces with batting. Why? Why? i don’t know maybe it’s a smart thing to help wedge it in place a little bit. Heh

Next, it’s time to move on to the hands. I cut a piece of foam long enough to cover the arm, then cut that piece in half lengthwise, making it only 1 inch thick instead of 2 inches. I tied foam and small bandages around the hand to hold it in place.

Finally found a suitable rocking chair. Adding just 2 inches of foam makes all the difference in the feel of this chair.

“I loaded all my slats into my mobile workbench and took them to my router table where I used 1/2” infinity round bits on both long sides.

Apply a small bead of glue to the underside of each slat at both attachment points. Then screw each lath in place with stainless steel screws.

“I started with a kick back at the base, then jumped back and forth from there,” he said. “I cut the divider to line them up quickly.”

Set the side chair and start cutting the board crosswise on the table, then use the miter to cut the end corner as well as the length of the board. Note: this rocking chair is spelled half round.

“What I do is use two boards, cut them to different lengths, then glue them together for a half circle,” Wilkerson said. “However, if I had used thick pieces of cedar, I would have hollowed out half to make this joint.”

This piece holds a lot of weight, so you open it along, Tilt the template as much as possible to get a smooth texture that flows along the rocking chair. Make sure there are no obstacles in bending down, and clamp all the pieces together, put them on the floor, and test their ability to shake before attaching the legs.

Note: For this piece, Wilkerson actually sat in a chair. The Real Seeder does not recommend sitting in a chair during this testing phase.

“For this part, I spread wood glue, then glued the short leg to the long leg, making sure everything was flush,” says Wilkerson.

“I initially thought about making some blind dowels to secure the arms to the legs, but since the screws are exposed on the chair this will fit too,” he says. Of course, we also countersunk here to let them sit below the surface, which gives it a nice soft feel. I then drilled a hole in the back and attached it with carriage bolts.
