I had a vision of a stunning distressed lumber centerpiece that would be the final focal point of the table. It makes me think of warm and cozy holiday gatherings with delicious baking in the oven and lots of candles burning.

After trying to find some fine grain wood that would work for what I had in mind, a trip to Home Depot was all it took to get some inspiration. And how a cheap fence became a candlestick!

Fence post in hand I set to work to make the most beautiful candle. It took some time and occasionally I got a helpful extra hand, but overall it was an easy project to put together as I envisioned.

This is a really fun and special piece that will add instant warmth to your home decor, and dare I say it, I think it would also make a great homemade gift for the candle lover in your life!

I want to share with you that my original vision for this project was to use a piece of reclaimed lumber, but after sorting through my dad’s piles of old boards and plans, I came up empty.

So it was off to Home Depot, where I bought an untreated 4×4 fence post and cut it into 3′ lengths. It turned out as good as I could have hoped!

Tip: Most home improvement stores will cut wood to length for free. Make sure the fence post is not treated with a funky print-treated color that is difficult to use when you stain it later.

Set Of 3

Step 1. Cut the board to size – or, as mentioned above, have it cut for you. At the size of my table, I like my candle to be in the middle of 3 feet.

You can adjust the length to fit your home. If you’re using a fence post, you’ll likely have leftover lumber that you can use for other projects!

Step 2. Next, decide where you want the candle to start with the core. I used a tape measure, square, and pencil to mark the placement of each candle, leaving 3 inches on each candle holder.

To determine placement and spacing, I lined up a row of lights across the top and decided that seven lights would be the perfect number of lights for my 3′ plank length.

Step 3. Make a mark on the board where the center of each candle will rest. Then it’s time to start drilling!

I used a 2-1/2″ diameter self-tapping drill bit (this even though I got it locally) because the base of the light is over 2″ in diameter.

Step 4. Use your self-tapping drill bit to cut a hole where each light fits in the center. You don’t have to cut too hard, but go deep enough for the little candle to sit on.

It’s okay if the holes are a little rough around the edges as it gives the distressed look we’re going for this project.

Be sure to wear gloves because the stain will definitely do a number on your hand if you get it on your hands. Rub the stain with a fairly heavy hand into the wood and let it dry completely.

I got one coat that did the trick and I didn’t use any kind of sealer or top coat because I wanted it to look older without aging.
