The size I decided on was based on the size of my garage (where this bench will be stored) also to make sure it could fit through our backyard gate in case I wanted to move it to our backyard for some future DIY projects.

I used a Kreg pocket jig to assemble these boards. The screws are thus more hidden and it is easier to put the sheet on them.

However, I will say that using pocket holes for this project is optional because you can attach the 2×4 boards together with the L-brackets or simply countersink the screw.

Btw, here’s a quick tip on how to keep track of your cut list. I like to write everything down, including how tall each board is and how many I need. When I cut boards, I can scrape them off and see what’s left.

Like the subframe, I cut them to length with a miter saw and attached them to the base frame.

Since the contact area is quite large, I did not bother with connecting the pocket hole. Plus, this is the outermost layer, so I don’t mind if the screw head sticks out.

In between, where the two 2×4 boards were touching, I added a piece of metal and attached it to the 2×4 so they would stick properly.

After we finished adding all the vertical boards, we attached two rectangular frames to support the table top that we will add later. This step is pretty straightforward.

And now that the structure is built, add the table surfaces. And I promise this step will look like a workbench when it’s done!

For table top. I use ¾ inch plywood. I specifically bought the high quality one because I want it to be flat, smooth and durable (less replacements in the future).

Also consider wood veneer. I chose red oak plywood because red oak is a hard wood that usually creates a stronger scratch resistant surface compared to soft wood. I used the same plywood to create a table top for my home office.

We bought 4′ x 8′ plywood from Home Depot and had it cut at the store – just one cross section will do (be sure to leave enough room for your table). So we cut about ⅓ of the way and could fit it in our little SUV.

When we got the plywood sheets home, we cut them on our workbench because the size was easier to understand. and we used our circular saw to dimension it.

We left about 1/2 inch of overhang on all sides. The edge can be quite rough after trimming on plywood, so I did a light sanding

I’m trying to make the surface removable so I can easily replace it if it gets damaged in the future. So I use L brackets to attach the table top. Just drill a guide hole and fasten it with ⅝ screws.

When installing the plywood, make sure you go very deep as it is only ¾ inch. You can mark where to stand on the drill with blue tape.

It’s also time to see if the surface of your table saw is slightly higher than the counter, this would be ideal so that the wood you are cutting can fall naturally onto the counter without getting caught between the slats.

But if your bench is slightly taller than the table saw, there is an easy solution. Simply add something to the bottom of your table saw to vomit. I like to use metal boards or just wood boards to support them.

Now we add a large piece of plywood to this DIY bench. Used to add a surface to the underside of this worktop for storage.

To save costs, we bought cheaper plywood for the bottom shelf, since we will only use it to store raw materials.

We use a different method than the counter to attach the plywood to the bottom shelf. We’re less likely to replace it, so we hit the frame with a nail gun pretty easily and quickly.

A grader can come in handy when I park a bench and want to create a level surface for certain projects.

He came up with a template for heavy bikes. So I mostly followed the instructions and played around with the template and made sure the height worked well. I also made sure the bike would work with the height ramp.

After installing this hardware, I tested it by rotating the workbench around my driveway and testing the straightener. I have to say they work pretty well!

The wheels roll smoothly, making it very easy to get this workbench out of our garage. And the equalizer is really cool and pretty easy to increase and decrease.

This project is pretty much complete, but I did the optional step of finishing the surface of the table top to make it more durable.

I use water based polyvinyl chloride. It dries very quickly and is odorless, which I like. I went three times in total.

And finally I can use my table saw on an actual table surface. This is a big improvement in the DIY life since I was cutting wood on the floor with my table saw (never going back lol)
