How To Make A Square Tablecloth – The first step in creating this tablecloth was to measure the table top, my table is a 54″ square table.
Since this fabric is 58″ wide, I cut the top piece at 58″ to get the right square.

If you can’t sew even a simple straight line, you can definitely complete this hem tutorial in less than an hour! It’s quick, easy, and won’t turn into a Pinterest fail! I used a sewing machine, but you can sew by hand. I think it would take about two hours.

First I did a test on an old vinyl tablecloth. This is a great way to reuse an old picnic tablecloth and save a ton of money because it costs about $3-8. 1. Place your fabric right side DOWN (ie inside out!) on the table you want to cover.

3. Without moving the tablecloth (you can place a heavy book on top to keep it steady), pinch the fabric at each corner to remove the “wings” from each corner. Pin both corner edges and all the way down the table legs, making sure not to go inside if your table legs retract.
4. Sew a vertical seam on each edge of the “wing”. Trim the “wing” to leave about 1/2 inch margin. You can participate in this for a flat seam, or if you have a serger that will not be a problem. I just let me!
5. Once you’ve sewn each corner, turn the tablecloth right side out and place it on your table, making sure it fits snugly and has no wrinkles. If you set it right, you shouldn’t have to do this part again – both my strings fit perfectly the first time – I say this to say it should be that easy!

6. Place all the chairs that will be at the table under the table. You’ll want to fold the edge of the tablecloth a few inches above the seat so little feet don’t get caught in the tablecloth. Measure how many inches from the table top your finished edge should sit. For our children’s table, it was 7 inches.
7. Turn the tablecloth over and place it on the table. Starting at the corners, measure down to where you want your hem (mine was 7″). Fold the edge of the fabric around the table leg and pin. Do this for all four corners. Then, holding the two corners, open the fabric to get a straight line that folds from corner to corner and pins in place. This is the easiest way I found to get a straight edge from edge to edge (without measuring or removing the fabric from the table). Repeat around all four sides of the table. I only folded my fabric once, leaving a raw edge, but you can double fold the finished edge.
8. Sew the hem and trim any excess fabric to within 1/4″ of the seam. You can choose to use a straight stitch or a more decorative and secure zigzag stitch.

Here’s a tip – use a “all over” print, so that if your fabric is a little stretched and uneven, you won’t see the gap. Lines and linear prints will quickly show any mistakes and will haunt you forever! I found a nice PUL fabric by the meter on Amazon.com and square vinyl tablecloths.
