To find the fabric measurements for the pillow panels, take the width and depth measurements and add 1″ to both numbers to allow for a 1/2″ seam allowance all around. These measurements are for the top and bottom panels of the pillow.
To determine the length of the side panel, add the actual measurements of the four sides of the main panel (the number plus extra inches for the seam allowance) together.
Add 1″ to this number to allow for a 1/2″ seam allowance. The height of your longest side panel is the height of the 1″ pillow stuffing with 1/2″ added for a gap.

To secure the long side panel and create a large loop around the edge of your pillow, fold the panel in half (right sides facing each other) and sew 1/2″ from the sides to join corners. .
Line up the edge of the loop on the side of the fabric with the edge of the top (right sides together) and pin the edge in place.
Press the bottom panel to the side panel in the same way as the top panel and mark all the corners.

Before you sew around the bottom edge, you’ll want to add a zipper to one of the ends so you can insert your pillow stuffing.
Place the zipper eye on the right side of the fabric, on the other side of your bottom layer. Pin the zipper where the zipper is inserted 1/2 inch from the edge.
Repeat the pinning and sewing process on the other side of the zipper to create a functional zipper.

Now you can sew around the rest of the bottom (starting at the end of the zipper and when you get to the beginning) to close.
Open your zipper a few inches before you sew it to reattach it later! Turn your lid inside out and you’re ready to add the filling!
Use a ruler and marker to measure the correct width of your pillow stuffing. * If you can’t buy a long pillow in one piece, just use as many pieces as needed to fill the length of the pillow.

*Note: I highly recommend making the width and length of the insert larger than your actual cover dimensions (maybe add an inch to both). So the inserts will fit into the cover and you will have a perfect pillow.
