I don’t remember what I did with it or where it ended up. The second one was specific to the last table I saw, and when I sawed it off, all the connections that were specific to it disappeared. For the third build, I decided to put together the John Heisz ibuildit.ca Ultimate Connection Jig. I really like John’s original version of this jig, but never got around to making it. It wasn’t until he released a new, improved version that I came up with plans to make another box fixture.
There are several design options for box fittings, but I chose this one based on the simplicity of the design and the fact that the off-the-shelf connectors are limited to multiples of 1/8″. I like the 1/8 ” very much. limitation here. because it allows me to use my regular full-cut saw table cloths in any situation. I see no need to complicate other times. 1/8″, 1/4″ and 3/8″ are probably all I ever need to cut, and if I need wider I have options too.

I bought the plans when John posted them in August, but only recently started building the jig. The thing I’m most hesitant about is finding 1″ threaded rods on site. A jig doesn’t need much plywood at all. I made my first cut with a circular saw on a slightly larger large panel. This allows me to take larger pieces to the saw table to cut to size. I used Purebond plywood from Home Depot. I have been using this since I built the miter station with great results. Plus, it’s formaldehyde-free and made in the USA, both of which are good.
The plan was well planned, first all the plywood pieces were made in batches. It’s basically a bunch of rectangles. super easy
After the cut is done, there are still some parts that need to be cut. I use a table saw sled for this because it’s easier to use as a top block than on my miter saw table when cutting small pieces.

The measurements of all the screws on the plan are simplified. In fact, a drill press can do this very quickly.
Two handles are included in the design, which is very nice. These grips keep your hands in a fixed position while you use the clamp, reducing the chance of you doing something stupid with your hands and causing an accident. To cut the handle, you need to cut larger holes to define the start and stop points of the mixing particles to remove the inner material. As I was writing this, it occurred to me that I have never used a router to round the edges of the handles. Well then. I figured if it’s that big, I’ll figure it out when I use it after I’m done.

The index for this fixture comes from 1″ threaded rod with 8 threads per inch. The plan called for construction glue or epoxy to glue it in place, neither of which I had on hand. I don’t want to wait all night either. for the construction glue to cure completely if I was going to use it anyway. So I decided to try hot melt It’s not a perfect solution You have to to work quickly and use lots of glue I ended up using lots of glue As fast as I could and it worked Although I don’t recommend this method.

No crazy nails are needed in the plan. I used a little bit here and there to hold certain pieces in place while I screwed them.
Before you know it, the index is ready to be built. Also, the benefit of using hot glue to attach the threaded rods is that I was able to make the entire blank in a few hours.
All the previously drilled holes are located exactly where they should be. However, I had to go through these materials in detail to get into the second material. The one screw I had on hand was much longer than expected, but I just wanted to use what I had on hand to keep the plywood from cracking.

The registration block is just mounted on the right side of the bracket. All it takes is some glue and two screws.
However, the jig is not entirely plywood. There are several sections that need to be cut from clean hardwood. I used a piece of hard maple that I got from the junkyard. Most of the pieces are of the same width and height, so they lay them out and split strips on one side giving consistency.
Clamping the small parts to the drill is an easy way to get the pegs out of the piece stuck in the wood and spin in your hand. It is much easier to drill all the holes in a small part before cutting.

As I said, I’m using equipment in addition to what’s on the plan, with the goal of trying to use what I have on hand and not buy again. You can use whatever you want as long as you know what the hardware should accomplish. The index piston is no more than a flat washer.
The index system is so simple, so good. Once everything was in place, I adjusted the cam stops to get the perfect 1/4 inch balance.
The bench vise saws a bevel groove, so a couple of slides were cut to size. Then, with the brake in the home position and the blade touching the vertical control block, the fence can be locked in the home position on the right side of the port. All that’s left is to stick it to the runner.

I took some glue to harden it and carefully attached them at the bottom with a few screws. The beauty of this clamp is that once it is properly positioned relative to the blade and attached to the slide, no further clamping is required. As long as you use the saw blade for a full cut, you should get fair results. I tested it by making a 1/8″ fitting and it had good clearance to close the fitting easily.
To avoid any confusion and hopefully eliminate any accidental half-time errors, I used colored markers to highlight all the other threads.
Final thoughts… I’m very, very happy with this port. It’s easy to do, it’s accurate, it’s the perfect speed, and since it uses a regular table saw blade (you can use a dado saw if you want), it’s really fast and easy to set up and use. If you want to build one of these, you can buy the plans here.
