We moved into a new house last week. I was greeted by a broken garbage disposal switch in the kitchen. The switch operates intermittently, depending on how much pressure is pressed.

Another problem was the duplex GFCI receptacle to the right of the switch, it didn’t work at all. Reset does nothing.

So I thought I would replace the duplex GFCI with a new one from the hardware store. After installation, the new GFCI did not trip despite the 120V power cord terminals (tested with my meter).

So I disconnected the load wires (pictured below) and the GFCI blew. The garbage switches continue to work (albeit as unstable as before). Obviously, the slave outlet (left) connected to the load (right) will not work if it is disconnected.

So I’m wondering if I should just change the switch combo and wire it the same way? Or maybe things weren’t connected properly in the first place. Unfortunately, I can’t ask anyone about what’s going on here.

For reference, this is a 2 unit box with 4 wires (actually 5 if you add a ground wire to the left).

I don’t know your “switch/outlet” combo, but I think it might be some kind of connection by default (ie the switch is connected to the outlet unless you break the tab) caused by the action of switches. Feed from the line side, the output is fed from the load side of the GFCI. However, the processor must be connected to the load side of the GFCI.

If the switch is the same switch that works depending on how hard you press, why didn’t you replace it?

The ground wire must be connected to the box. The other cable must check the ground and connect to the box if it has one. The box and ground must be connected to the GFCI and the ground terminal of the switch/outlet.

If you didn’t throw it away, the GFCI you removed is probably working fine given what you found in the new GFCI.

If you want to provide GFCI protection for the entire device combined (switch and receptacle), you need to provide only one power supply from the load side of the GFCI to the device.

If you only want GFCI to protect the receptacle of a combination appliance, the appliance must provide multiple power supplies.

There are 2 double headers on the wall. Both are connected to the same switch in the switch box.

It has 2 rows (possibly 1 going in and 1 going out to another quad). On the left side, there was a normal 15 amp receptacle. There was originally a GFCI receptacle on the right side, but I started switching to a regular receptacle in the picture. I’ve looked at the wiring since the GFCI was plugged in, but I don’t know if it’s correct/safe.

So my question is, will this quad box work without the GFCI outlets and wires as shown below?

The box is simple, I just changed the socket and kept the thread the same.

Wiring A Duplex Receptacle

So you will see two boxes anyway. You can see the location of the short jumper between the two tanks in each box. Ignore them… your first box has incoming and outgoing data, the second box only has incoming data. As you might expect, only. In one box you can see only input, in the other – input and output. This works on another box.

This wiring is perfectly normal. I don’t know what you want to do. You can turn off the outgoing box of box 1, but then you have to run a new line to box 2. T chains are allowed, you don’t need to run them in series.

Each box, then add the input, output, and braids from each box. I often do this in hard to work areas to reduce the amount of sewing I have to do in odd positions.

If you remove a GFCI, you must replace it with another GFCI or protect the entire circuit with a GFCI breaker.

If you live in the United States, your area probably uses the National Electrical Code. The NEC requires that garage outlets be GFCI protected.

Trying to replace two separate traditional 3-way switches with a Lutron Caseta wireless system.
