Back to today’s post, we also have a chair tutorial on how I sew a seat cushion. As I mentioned before, this is not what I would call sewing for beginners. It’s not even the hardest thing in the world. But you’ll need some patience and planning to keep this baby alive.

How To Make A Leather Chair Cushion (leather Chair Pad)
Mark the size of the pillow with a foam marker. Carefully cut along the lines with a serrated tool such as a paring knife. For best results, cut slowly and keep the blade as straight as possible.
Fold the fabric in half or fold the two layers together wrong side up. Place the foam on top and circle around it. Using a ruler and a cutter or scissors, carefully cut 1/2″ from the traced line to allow for seam allowance. Be sure to cut out two layers, this will be the top and bottom of the pillowcase.
Cut a 4-inch strip along the front of the pillowcase. It should be the same as the long side of the pillow, plus 1 inch for seam allowance.

Cut two shorter pillowcases; they should be 4 inches higher and 3 inches longer than the short side of the pillow.
For the back flap (where the velcro fasteners are), you will need two pieces that are as long as the front straps and 4-1/2 inches tall (they will overlap). NOTE. If you are using a shower curtain, you can trim the back wings along the trimmed edge; in this case the rear fenders need only be 3-1/2 inches wide.
Sew the side panels to the front to create a long side part. To do this, place one side piece along the short end on top of the front piece, right side out. Sew along the short edge with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Repeat on the other side.

Place the top plate face up. Align the long side to the edge, wrong side up. Make sure your border seams match by 1/2 inch on each corner. Fix the corners. Then add pins along the long front edge and down each side (Image 1). Using a 1/2 inch allowance, sew down the next short side until you reach the corner pins. When the needle is in the down position, raise the presser foot, remove the needle and turn the workpiece 90 degrees to sew the longer edges (Figure 2). Repeat these steps when you reach the second corner pin. Repeat this process to attach the bottom panel to the edge. Turn it right side out to check the seam (Figure 3).
Fold one long edge of the back cover 1/2 inch inside out and iron, then fold the other 1/2 inch and iron; this should hide the raw edge. Sew along the folded edge to form the hem. Repeat for the second flap. Then repeat the process for the short side of the back valve. Your back flap will now be hemmed on three sides. If you are using the edge of a shower curtain, you will only need to sew the short side up.
Line up the back edge of the pillow top with the raw edge of one of the back flaps, right side out. Sew with a 1/2 inch seam. Repeat with the bottom edge.

Turn the cover over and trim the original seams with small scissors, a zigzag stitch, or an edge binding machine. Use the same technique on the sides or hem them for a more finished look.
Turn the lid right side out and insert the foam. Cut the burdock root into 5-inch pieces. Starting in the center of the pillowcase, attach each side of the Velcro to the back cover. Place one side of the Velcro on the outside of the bottom flap, near the seam, and the other side of the Velcro on the back of the top flap, near the edge. Repeat as needed, depending on the length of the pillowcase. Carefully remove the foam and sew the Velcro to the fabric.
Iron the pillowcase for nice sharp edges. Insert the foam into the lid, screw the flaps to the back edge and close the back flaps. Place a duvet cover on the bench to sit comfortably. It’s no secret that I hate sewing. I tried my best not to pull out the old sewing machine. Yes, I sew a little. I know how to sew azai, but I still don’t like it. The easiest way I’ve seen to cut upholstery foam is with an electric kitchen knife. That being said, you can also use a regular old kitchen knife, utility knife, or even craft scissors if the foam isn’t too thick.
Above you can see where I cut the foam to fit the bench. Since this foam is so thin, I used plain old craft scissors.

You can see above where I assembled the blocks with all my stuff. If I buy wood, I buy plywood.
Then I lay the fabric face down on the ground, the foam on top, and the wood on top. I folded the fabric over the wood and then took a nail gun to attach the fabric to it.
This may require two sets of hands. The best way to do this is to have one person hold it firmly while the other uses a staple gun to hold the finished fabric in place.
