While looking for ideas for a DIY desk, I did a little shopping and fell in love with this desk, which was…ahem…$847, so I created a version with pre-made materials. I’m very happy with how it turned out. What do you think?
How To Build A Rustic Industrial Office Desk From Reclaimed Wood
1. Also cut the wood or a pre-cut wood panel to the size you need – I bought mine at Lowes in their pre-timber section. They come in different sizes I chose 24″ x 48″ If your size is different from their standard size, they cut it to size I actually tore 3 inches off mine to better fit my space This item is only available in stores You can be totally creative with the above I was thinking of using 2x4s as boards, but I wanted a simple background
2. Pencil drawer You can make a wooden drawer for a less expensive option These drawers are the bomb though!

First I did the top preparation of the wood The wood I bought was very well made I sanded everything and rounded the sharp edges a bit I sanded it by hand to get better control I struggled with what to do for a finish, but after much thought, I decided to keep it simple (again!) and just sand and apply the polyurethane. This will be a desk, I wanted a smooth surface, so I gave it 3 coats. After each use I let the coat dry overnight I lightly sanded between each coat It was so hard to do! I just wanted to do it! But in the end it ended up being pretty smooth I’m glad I did
Attaching Isop is easy Comes with all the hardware you need The brackets are attached to the side rails which are then attached to the wood Make sure you place it where you want It wanted to be centered
Now place them in a triangle at each corner ready to attach the hairpin legs I watched the placement but you can mark if you want Attach with 3/4″ screws
Make Cabinets The Easy Way
In this picture you can see how big the pencil case is You can even fit a keyboard inside! It also has this great locking mechanism that prevents it from opening on you
In this picture you can see my entrance (touch of the farm!) It was one of my first DIY projects And I have a little storage on the shelf and basket next to the desk, so that’s good!

For a long time I wanted to build a classic desk made of beautiful solid wood for my shop. This is the desk It is made of rough sand mahogany for the frame and rough sun mahogany for the top The drawers are made with half-blind dovetails and desk dowels The desk has four drawers, two on each side I didn’t want not two very deep drawers, so I decided to go with four low drawers that you can open from either side.

I wanted to make this desk out of solid walnut, so I bought a piece of walnut that I had to mill. If you want a big piece of wood, sometimes this is the only way to do it. I don’t have a log, so I end up doing a lot of planning by hand. cut on the table Then back to the shop, a little more planning
Initially, I thought of connecting the desk with metal brackets So I cut all my wood, attached the desk with brackets, only to realize that I didn’t like it. So now that the wood is cut to size, it’s too late for the mortise and tenon tide, so I’m sitting on the saws. For the top I used Rough Sun Mahogany Here again, I did a lot of planning to straighten the wood Once the wood was straight I attached the three boards together with glue and dowels The top measures 25″ x 37″.
I decided to go with the half blind for the drawers because it is very strong and has a good knot. I actually created an instructable dedicated to making a half-blind dovetail drawer, so go and check it out: Make a Half-Blind Dovetail Drawer.
You can use any finish for the drawers, it’s just a matter of personal preference and time This method takes a lot of time, but in general very nice I also cut a hole in the side with a router and slipped in a piece of hardboard for the bottom of the drawer

To connect the base to the top, I cut these small nuts and drilled two holes on one side and one hole on the other. So I cleared the pieces in the corner of the desk, where the drawers are mounted, and pulled the drawers out. Now I’m scrambling under the desk, I managed to break it into pieces
After a lot of drying, it was time to finish the desk I decided to go with the cold polyurethane by hand, so I mixed polyurethane 1:1 with mineral spirits. Reusing these scraps means I can install a drawer under my workbench, which gives me space to store various tools and materials without piling them on top of my work area. An easy addition, always welcome as extra storage
