Diy Dining Tables
The first step is to make sure I have enough wood to make the table. The size I need… 72”L x 30”W. You might think it’s narrow, but I’m new to narrow tables. I think they are very conversational and simple, so I call them community table sizes. Plus, it’s great because their footprint doesn’t take up too much space in tight spaces and leaves plenty of room for seating and walking around. So, help me start a new trend for community tables!
I had some wood, so I looked at the wood… since it was reattached I wanted to make sure all the nails and screws were gone before I sent it to my tool. Also, by looking at it I can pick out the beautiful features or features of the tree that I like and place it where it stands out. Oh and hide what I don’t like… the fun of working with wood or fruit trees.
This construction is very simple and is a beginner project. If you’re using 2×8 like I am, you’ll need a table saw to rip the base. Or you can just use a 2x’4 for the base and then you need a drill, a pocket hole jig (I use a Craig Foreman and I love it, but a regular K4 will do just as well) and a cutter. Finish it This is the setting. . In any case, it will be scary!

Gather the legs. Tip: Make sure there are holes in the bottom and top of the bag, so they will Not visible at the time of assembly. Also use exterior grade wood glue and exterior grade blue pocket hole screws.
Wear an apron. Tips: Attaching a piece of wood to a piece of plastic and placing it on top of the leg will be like a second hand that allows you to handle the pocket hole so that it is not visible after the session.

Attach the apron parts. Tip: After the base is assembled I’m waiting to measure and cut it so I can make it right.
Create a large hole in the apron to mount on. Tip: I countersink the holes so I can use standard 1 1/4″ screws to attach the top. , the holes are wider than the screws you use to attach the floor to allow the wood to move through the seasons. .
Attach the top panel to the base. Tip: Use 1/4 inch wood to reinforce the space between each board, the space allows for Drain the water (in case of rain) and allow each sheet to expand and make the practice.

Anyway..a quick SparkNotes project that fell through…Danny needed a dining table for the backyard and it only took a day to build…so it’s done. This is the way!

5. Once the table is assembled, we fill in the observed screw holes with 3/8″ dowels and DAP Weldwood Instant Wood Adhesive. This product is perfect for body building because it cures in 30 minutes, which means you can get into the sand and finish quickly! We also hit some spots with DAP Plastic Wood-X, which I like because it’s an outer wood bag that turns pink and dries, so you know when it’s ready to sand. !
6. Before flipping the table over, Danny and I attached rubber bands to the bottom legs to raise the table and prevent water from sinking into the deck over time. Since the cedar is so soft, we added DAP tank braces to prevent the bumper bolts from slipping or loosening over time.
7. Then, sanding and preparing to finish the table. We decided to fill all the knots and grooves on our table with DAP Tank Bond Clear Epoxy .

Quick Pro Tip: When working with any type of filler, always make sure to do a stain/application test before using the program for best results!

While I originally thought of many different styles for this outdoor dining table, I ultimately settled on a very simple design.
Reason? The simple placement of the legs allows for a perfect fit while keeping the dimensions to match the existing carpet that I wanted to keep. In other words, my goal is to seat as many people as possible without extending the length of the table beyond the carpet I’m working on.
From a visual perspective, I believe the simple yet rustic feel works well with the overall modern farmhouse aesthetic, but more importantly, I believe this design will be the most functional for our family (especially the new dining chairs we added to the table. . . – to this mama’s boy there are no cushions or clean cloths to keep happy).

I also hope that the modern flowers of the stain will work well with the natural elements. Time will tell but I hope the tree will age well.
While I briefly considered painting the table black, I was concerned that the paint would chip easily and require a lot of maintenance.
Since we have an old 6x6x8 post to use for the legs, it only cost $49 to build this table. For a table of this size and strength, this is an insane steal!
