The first steps to building a vertical stream table seem simple, but it’s not an inexpensive project, so you don’t want to overdo it. Do your research. I didn’t do enough research beforehand. I usually like to jump into a project and then learn from my mistakes. In the future, these are the courses I should study first:

I started this riverside coffee table with fresh cherry wood that I bought from The Wood Source in Ottawa. It was four feet long and eighteen inches wide. Tony cut me in half on the table, then I made a line and cut it to the edge of the living room.

Then I made the shapes. I used 3/4″ melamine for the sides of the frames and 1/4″ melamine for the bottom.

I thought the 1/4″ melamine bottom would slide and the coffee table would come off when the resin dried. Don’t!

The 1/4″ mdf didn’t come off one piece at a time. No, it was like a thousand copies. It would only be after hours of removing it and using a belt light to remove the rest. Save yourself some time and use thick. melamine for the shapes.

After I prepared the cherry tree and shaped it, it was time to pour the resin. I first mixed a bit of two part epoxy and coated the bottom of the mold. That way you won’t have bubbles under the coffee table. I then carefully placed two pieces of live wood into the forms and pressed them into the form.

Time to mix the tar for the next stream. I mixed the resin frame and added a clear blue paint and green paint. The plan was to paint the river blue to resemble a tropical ocean. I thought the amount of paint I added would be the perfect color. It looked good when I mixed it, but the color changed when it cured. It looked like toxic waste in a river rather than a beach in Jamaica, and I didn’t like it.

My goal was to find the perfect bottle with one piece of resin and make it. This did not happen. As I said, I spent several hours painting the melamine floor, and then spent a lot of time sanding the surface to smooth it out. Here’s what the top looks like after washing it…

To adjust the colors, I mixed a little epoxy resin and added a lot of clear blue pigment and a small drop of opaque black pigment. I poured it under the coffee table, next to the river of the coffee table.

After it cured, I sanded the resin to give it a matte finish. From the top of the table, the color deepened to a beautiful azure blue.

The last step of this coffee resin table was to sand the surface. I mixed the resin, poured it and spread it directly to the hair and feathers and cardboard.

All flowers can then be removed using a torch or torch. Once you’re happy with the top and make sure there are no drips on the sides or bottom, stick! Let it cure for 24 hours without touching it.

My last mistake was that I (or Tony, I don’t know who to blame) touched the resin before it cured and left a finger. I thought about sand blasting the whole thing and giving it a matte finish, but the glossy epoxy is really good. So I sanded lightly with 400 grit sandpaper to remove the finger prints and sprayed another coat of epoxy. The result was flawless with no fingerprints and a beautiful, glossy finish.

Wouldn’t it knock your socks off if you worked at a desk all the time scratching your head while putting on your feet? No, that’s not right Tony. He didn’t come with me. Actually putting the legs in was the fun part of this coffee table build.

I bought the metal legs from Lowe’s and painted them matte black. To install them, I pre-drilled a hole and used 5/8″ screws to attach the legs to the top.

Overall, I am very happy with this riverside coffee table. I made a mistake, but I fixed it and ended up with a nice device. Have you ever tried to make a river coffee table? Was your build a little more interesting than my experience?

As a woodcarver myself, I have a bucket list of projects I want to build at some point in my career…and at the top of that list is a resin river table. While river resin paintings are made all the time, one thing I’ve noticed is that most of these projects are made with industrial tools in department stores. So I decided to do it myself using tools and power tools available at your local home improvement store. Even better, to help make this happen, I joined my amazing friends at Bernzomatic and got to work!

Here, you don’t need an industrial-sized, fully equipped workshop to make cool stuff. Actually, I originally wanted to do this project using three power tools (a circular saw, a drill, and a sander), but I miscalculated and ended up using a power drill. But if you don’t let the resin run down your boards, you can avoid using three power tools for this project altogether!

I added black pigment to make the river black. You can choose any pigment!

14. I then made sure my boards were loose and poured epoxy deep into the river hole and any cracks that needed to be filled. Follow the directions on the resin container to determine how deep you can pour at one time. I was ambitious and when I recovered, the mockery went away, so be careful!

15. After pouring the resin, I used a light Bernzomatic B4500 Heat Shrink on the large surface areas to remove as many bubbles as possible from the resin. This is important because I don’t want the raspberry to heal with the flowers.

I then looked at casting and sometimes had to use the Bernzomatic ST2200 light for hobby and home purposes to remove any stray flowers as they dry.
