I’ve simplified the construction process so it can be built with three common power tools: a drill; A miter saw and a hacksaw. I think this is a very beginner friendly project. It teaches some basic woodworking skills and at the end you have a useful compact plate.

How To Make A Step Stool

All you need is a length of pine 1×3 and 1×8 from your local hardware store.

For absolute beginners: In North America these types of boards are available at most hardware stores. A 1×8 board is 3/4″ thick and 7-1/4″ wide. The 1×3 board is 3/4″ thick and 2-1/2″ wide. (1×8 refers to the rough measurements before the wood is sanded, but I agree the terminology can be confusing for beginners.)

Here are all the big dimensions: Both the top and legs are cut from 1×8. The top is 12 inches long and the legs are 6 inches long, so you only need about 2 feet of 1×8.

So the top is 12 x 7-1/4 x 3/4 and the legs start at 6 x 7-1/4 x 3/4. The center support is a 10″ 1×3 section – up to 10″ x 2-1/2″ x 3/4″.

The dimensions for my measurements with friends are: Top 305mm x 185mm x 20mm. 152mm x 185mm x 20mm. The center support is 250mm x 65mm x 20mm

Starting with the miter saw, cut the top to 12 inches, then cut the two legs to 6 inches, and finally extend the middle leg to 10 inches.

My saw couldn’t cut the full width of the 1×8, so I had to go back after the cut and saw it a second time to finish the cut.

There is a circular incision at the bottom of each leg. First, draw a line down the middle of the board. You will need it later to know where to drill when installing the project. Therefore, draw it the height of the entire leg.

Then, Set the compass to 2″ and draw a circle on the bottom of each leg. I find it’s easier to mark the circle cut when the legs are still rectangular, so I’ll do this step before going back to the miter. Saw to cut the leg corners.

Each leg has an internal angle of about 7 degrees. Set the saw at 7 degrees and cut this angle on each leg. There is no need to measure or mark the lines; So the cut starts at the outside corner of the 1×8 leg piece and cuts through.

Attach the legs to the chair and using a jigsaw, carefully cut out a circle from the bottom of each leg. If the jigsaw prevents you from cutting half the circle at once, you may need to stop halfway to reposition the jigsaw.

All the parts are cut out so you are almost ready to assemble. First, take some time to smooth out the pieces. If you have a powerful device, you can use it. But pine is so soft that it can be sanded with 150-grit sandpaper. This step depends on how long you plan to complete the course. If you are going to paint, 150 grit is too smooth.

Place the center leg on the leg and use that to measure the marks on the center line so you know where to drill the two holes for the screws. Both legs have two screws that attach it to the center support.

Use a drill bit to drill the pilot holes in the legs. In the picture, I placed a small piece of wood under the leg to prevent it from digging into the base.

Adapt the episodes; Bring the previously marked center line to one leg and mark 3/8″ on either side of the center line. This adds up to 3/4″. Matches the width of the center support. This helps support the center to sit well on the legs.

(If you’re working with metric – if your center support is 20mm thick, you’ll mark 10mm on each side of the center line – half the thickness of your center support.)

Apply glue to each side of the center support and place it between the two legs. In the picture, lay it down neatly and put it on a neat surface. I used a clamp to hold the pieces together when I put in the screws. It is not shown here, but is first re-drilled with a drill to extend the pilot hole to the center support. I have very long screws and want to make sure they don’t break the center support.

Then flip everything over and place the top next to the legs and use the top to mark the center of the leg. Draw this beam line to guide the drill through the top and drill/screw directly into the center of the leg thickness. Drag easily to easily erase the pencil mark later.

Add a small amount of glue along the middle leg and top of both legs. Then carefully place the top and glue it with a thin layer. Prevents the top from slipping when drilling and screwing.

Measure 1-3/4″ from the edge to accommodate each of the four screws. It’s best to measure for a good, snug fit. Drill the front holes with a countersink and insert the four screws.

The measurements are listed above, but don’t be afraid to change them. Want a longer seat? Stretch the top and middle to the same size. Or make the legs longer and wider (to accommodate the top size) and you’ve got a chair. Make it bigger and have a larger coffee table around the top corner.

I think this small project shows a lot of different techniques that should be transferred to build other projects.
