I started by measuring and cutting the foam to fit the seat. To save on foam, I decided to order it online instead of buying it at the craft store. The problem with online shopping is that I can’t touch (or sit on) the product and I can’t decide if it’s 2 inches or 3 inches. I have stopped buying the 2 inch range. When it arrived and I tried it, I decided the 3″ bone would be better for the purpose (don’t worry, the 2″ foam found a home in the back I made and was perfect for it). I’m a little impatient and will be spending the weekend working on the cushions, so instead of waiting for the new foam to ship, I bought my foam at the craft store with a 60% discount coupon (which after the money is about same price as online foam).
Cutting foam can be tricky and messy if you’re trying to use scissors or a box cutter. An electric paring knife cuts the foam quickly and easily with little work or mess (you can also use a serrated bread knife).
Foam can be expensive, so instead of relying on my math and ending up doing more work, I waited until the house was finished and put in the backsplash before directly cutting the foam.

Once the foam was cut, I was ready to move on to the fabric for the seat. I knew I wanted to take a few things into consideration when I was making the seat cover. First, I want it to fit snugly so the fabric doesn’t show slack or shift. I really don’t want the cushion to fall off the bench every time I get up or move – that should be enough to stop me from sitting there! Finally, I want to zip up the back so I can defoam and wash the cover if needed, as it will likely leak if needed, if you need to shed water and mud often.
I used tan fabric on the top and sides of the chair. To make sure things don’t end up on the counter, I used a cotton cloth for the bottom (this cloth works well and really holds the fabric in place).
To make the cover on the foam, I added 1″ to the size of my foam to determine what the fabric size for the top and bottom should be. For example, if I wanted the finished pillow to be 15″ X 36″, I would cut my fabric at 16″ X 37″ (plus 1″). Once the cover is sewn, it will be the same size as the foam and will make it nice and comfortable.

I cut two separate parts for the pillow. The first part covered the left, front and right sides of the foam and I cut it using the same “plus 1″ concept as the top and bottom parts. Since my foam is 3 inches wide, I cut the fabric 4 inches wide to allow for a 1/2 inch seam. For the length of this piece, I added the length of the left, front, and right sides of the foam plus 1″. For example, if my left side is 15″, the front is 36″ and the right is 15″, I would add 15″. + 36 + 15 + 1 for a total of 67″. The first page in this example will measure 4″x67”.
Another sheet covered the back of the pillow. Since the back is not visible, I put the zipper on this side. With the back and ends clean, this piece should be wider than the first. Instead of adding 1 inch here, you’ll add 2 inches to the width to compensate for the duvet cover. In our example, the width of this piece will be 5″; but you’re still only adding 1 inch to the length. The second piece in this example will measure 5″ x 37″.

Before adding the zipper to the back, I finished the stitching. To do this, cut the fish in half lengthwise (you will get two long skins). With right sides together, sew a 1/2-inch strip down one side. Once sewn, unfold the loose end and lay the fabric right side up on the table. Use an iron or finger to open the 1/2″ hole.
With the back facing down, place the quilt cover (for my pillow size, I used a 30-inch zipper so I could easily insert the foam inside the cover) face up toward the back. quilt. Use the sewing machine cover to sew the fabric at the beginning and end. This helps open/close the zipper as you get closer to the zipper handle while sewing, so the zipper foot gets as close to the zipper teeth as possible.

Having unzipped the belt on the zipper (the zipper should be able to open and close to its full length), we are ready to push the back forward/left/right. Place the back on the table, right side up. Turn the lid over so that the right side is facing up. Insert the foam into the lid and close with a lid. You may need to adjust the foam and move it around the lid a few times to get everything lined up correctly.
