How To Make Round Bar Stool Cushions – I don’t like sitting on bare chairs. Pekkani does not agree with them. they hurt. Because of this, every chair in my house has some kind of chair cushion. Sometimes I even stack layers of pillows together because one just isn’t enough.
I recently picked up a pair of white metal bar stools to go with the kitchen counter. Unfortunately there are metal barstools and no cushions. Before I sat down for a while, I put another chair cushion on top of the chair. It worked great… my 18 month old is starting to learn to climb on stools. His technique involved first pushing the cushion down, then grabbing the sides of the seat and pulling himself up.

As soon as I saw my little one’s new climbing adventure, I knew I had to get a flexible chair cushion. My bottom won’t allow an 18 month old’s whims. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find thick chair cushions that I liked, so I decided to make my own.

I used Joan’s 2 inch thick cushion foam for these cushions and they are much more comfortable than the 1 inch thin chair cushions you can buy at Ikea. I also made velcro to keep it in place when the baby has fits. (My kid has now mastered the art of climbing on padded barstools, but at least he stays on the cushion).
Since the cushion covers have rounded corners (to match the rounded corners of the barstools), it didn’t matter that the foam was a square piece as they would roll nicely inside the cover. This was great because it was impossible to cut perfectly rounded corners in 2 inch foam. I also found this helpful video that explains how to cut pillow foam. Looks like a bread knife is the answer! Who knew!
Measure the circumference of the seat pattern with a tape measure (make sure you are measuring the drawn pattern, not the sewn pattern). The circumference of the chair was 45″. Since the foam I chose is 2″ thick, you will need to add 1″ (for the two 1/2″ seams) to both measurements. This means you will be cutting a 46″ x 3″ piece of fabric.

Mark the center and quarter lengths of the [side piece] by cutting the seams with scissors. Make sure the quarter length is measured 1/2 inch (seam allowance) from the edge of the fabric.
Left: Turn the entire Velcro strip to the right side with a ring turner. I do this by pushing in slowly and carefully with the tip of a loop lathe*
*Depending on the thickness of the fabric, you can use a loop turner to hook and turn the fabric the right way round. However, I couldn’t do this with the fabric I chose because it was heavy.

Cut the foam with a bread knife according to the drawn guide line. Use a repetitive cutting motion instead of a sawing motion.
Note: A tight stitch helps prevent the fabric from stretching, especially around curves. This is important when you are sewing on a straight edge of a curve. I usually set the stitch length to the largest setting (4 on my machine) and sew 1/4″ from the edge of the fabric. When I purl, I hold a finger behind the presser foot and gently push the fabric through the machine, causing the fabric to pucker slightly where you hold your finger to prevent stretching.
Attach the [side piece] to the [seat pattern] and align the [seat pattern] notch with the [side piece] notch. Sew with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Cut the [Velcro] in half and attach it to the other half of the [Seat Tape] in the middle of each side (black dashed line). Make sure the wrong side of the [Velcro Tie] is facing the right side of the [Seat Pattern].
Leave one side open (dotted red line) and sew [seat stitch] to [side piece] and turn right side out.
Use pins where the velcro strips overlap and cut 2 velcro strips (loop and hook) to the length of the cover.

To make the pillow cover, I cut the foam pillow all the way around, added 2-3 inches around it, and cut a piece about 3-4 inches long (plus seam allowances and extra…remember, it’s easy to do cut. add length) to go around the edge of my pillow. Next, measure your elastic (I used 1/2″ wide elastic) and wrap it around the legs of the stool just below the top.
Then use my super technical method to close this loop by sewing back and forth to bring the two ends together.
Then take the pillow cover back and tuck the rubber band under the second fold of the hem. Make sure you fold enough to sew a channel on the elastic, not a seam.
