How To Make A Chair From A Tree – Not only does this chair keep my body eighteen inches off the ground, but it’s a constant reminder of the wonderful journey with the tree. When I made the chair, almost twenty years ago, I couldn’t get my hands on a copy of Make a Chair from a Tree. But Jennie Alexander has just produced a video (available here) covering the whole process. I bought a VHS tape of Drew and Louise Langsner at Country Workshops. I don’t know what I would have done without the resources and tools available through Drew and Louise.
Anyway, I watched this video over and over again, collecting pages of notes and sketches. The whole process felt amazing and Jennie was so encouraged. In fact, he could make a chair out of wood. I made a razor horse, a simple oven, and more at work, according to Jennie’s advice. All of these things continue to serve me well in the store. As I began nailing the white ash wood to the chair sections, the wonder of the wood deepened within me and I had a whole new skill and understanding, and a chair!

I could go on and on about my appreciation for Jennie’s contributions, and I’ve written a bit about it here and here. Simply put, Make a Chair from Wood: Third Edition is available. This was made possible by the efforts of Jennie herself, before her death in 2018, and the dedication of Chris Schwarz, Megan Fitzpatrick, Larry Barrett, Peter Follansbee, Drew Langsner, Brendan Gaffney and many others who participated in it. They did an amazing job. All methods are clearly explained and photographed. The team effort is a tribute to Jennie’s influence and connections.

That’s it. 2019 marked my first solo trip teaching students how to make Jennie Alexander’s Back Chair. But my version of it. We will follow the general format that I learned from JA and Drew Langsner, who have taught this class together for decades. I learned a lot from the couple in that chair; and studied at Country Workshops and the Alexander Store in Baltimore. In the early 1990s I worked with JA on the second edition of the book.

The video “Making a Chair from a Tree” is based on Jennie’s book (of the same name) and the classes she teaches. Jennie has been teaching pole and step making for 25 years in her Baltimore studio and around the country. During that time, he refined and simplified the process, and these improvements are included in this video. Like all Lost Art Press books, “Make a Chair from a Tree: Third Edition” was produced and printed in the United States. The book has 184 pages and measures 9 inches square, the size of the original edition of the 1978 printing. Unlike the original edition, our version is in color and is hardcover. book.
