How To Make A Chair Into A Bar Stool – I don’t like sitting on bare chairs. My gut doesn’t agree with them. hurt That’s why every chair in my house has some kind of chair cushion. Sometimes I even stack pillow layers on top of each other because one is not enough.
I recently purchased a pair of white metal bar stools to match our kitchen counter. Unfortunately, since this is a metal bar stool, there is no cushion. Before sitting down, I put another chair cushion on the chair for a while. This worked well…until my 18 month old started to learn to climb up on poop. His technique was to push the cushion first, then grab the sides of the seat before swinging and pulling himself up.

As soon as I saw my kid’s new climbing conquest, I knew I had to get a tie-dye chair cushion. My belly won’t give in to the whims of an 18 month old. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find chunky chair cushions that I liked, so I decided to make my own.

I used 2″ thick cushion foam from Joann’s for these cushions and they are SO much nicer than the 1″ chair cushions you can buy at Ikea. I also made velcro straps so it would stay in place when the baby attacked. (My kid has already mastered the art of climbing on soft bar stools, but at least he stays on the cushion).
Since the cushion covers have rounded corners (to match the rounded corners of the bar stool) it didn’t matter that the foam was a square piece because they were nicely rounded inside the cover. This was perfect because it was impossible to cut perfectly rounded corners on 2″ foam. I also found this helpful video on how to cut foam flooring. A bread knife is probably the answer! Who knew!
Measure the perimeter of the seat pattern with a tape measure (be sure to measure the tracing pattern, not the pattern with the extra seam allowance). My chair was 45″ in circumference. Since the foam I chose is 2″ thick, you need to add 1″ to both measurements (for two 1/2″ seam allowances). That means you have 46″ x 3″. Cut a piece of fabric

Mark the mid- and quarter-length notches of [SIDE FABRIC] by cutting with scissors. Make sure the quarter length measures 1/2 inch (seam allowance) from the edge of the fabric.
REVERSE: Use a loop turner to turn all the Velcro right side out. I do this by gently pressing with a Loop End Turner*
* Depending on the thickness of your fabric, you can use a loop turner to hold the fabric and turn it right side out. But I couldn’t do it with the fabric I chose because it was heavy.
How To Turn Bar Stool Chairs Into Dining Chairs
Using a bread knife, follow the guidelines created to cut the foam. Use a repeating clipping motion instead of a clipping motion.
Note: Standing seams prevent the fabric from stretching, especially around curves. This is important when sewing a loop to a straight edge. I usually set the stitch length to the maximum (4 on my machine) and sew 1/4″ from the edge of the fabric. I keep my toe behind the foot when I’m sewing the stay stitch and gently squeeze as the fabric goes through the machine. This will allow the fabric to gather slightly where you hold your toe to prevent stretching. causes.
Attach the [SIDE PANEL] to the [SEAT PATTERN] and align the notches on the [SIDE PANEL] with the [SIDE PANEL]. Sew a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

With a needle, mark where the velcro straps overlap and cut 2 velcro straps (loop and hook) equal to the length of the overlap.
