We have three wooden dining chairs at our table, two of which are orphaned. Well the seats are “hard” but not my style. I want to connect them all. In this tutorial I’ll try to show you a simple but fun pattern that anyone with a sewing machine should make. Fabric – I went with fabric, but any household fabric will work. I like clothes that are durable and versatile. You need 5 meters to make 2 chairs, about 1/2 meter left. The fabric should be washed/dried first.

What else you’ll need: Sewing machine, thread, tape measure, scissors, a 24-inch square piece of muslin or kraft paper, chalk and/or disappearing marker, some pins and tape, and a seam/iron. Optional: felt and wool

A. Measure the return wide and high. Add 2 inches to each for ease of sewing and good sizing. Mines 24 inches wide, 26 inches tall, with an extra 2 inches. (first 2 photos)

B. Cut 2 pieces using these measurements and cut the fabric in half (most home fabrics are at least 54 inches long) taking care to preserve the edges and grain lines. (Photos 3 and 4)

C. Place the seat on the floor and place the 2 pieces on the back of the chair. Feel the middle corners with your fingers and follow the line. Bring the piece to the surface and cut close to the chalk line, adding 5/8 inch for balance. Cut it in half to fit and make small adjustments. (photo 5-8)

D. Check and adjust everything with chalk lines and then remove the drop (pictures 2, 3 and 4)

F. Remove the seam (you just need to separate the two parts and pull the loose threads). Cut two chair pieces from your project. (One per seat) (5 photos)

G. Sew the 2 pieces right sides together. Sew well or with a tape seam. You can use a foot or a zipper foot for this. I suggest both methods. You fasten the tubes in the front, insert a finger or stick, and sew three layers at once. A more advanced tip is to pull a little on the bottom piece, as the presser foot will stretch the top fabric slightly along the course. Look at the right side of your work and if necessary, make the second row of stitches even closer to the tube.

C. Enjoy your unique creations! This is optional and you can use the leftovers to make a small pillow for support.

Helpful tip: Use 100% cotton, otherwise you won’t get enough white fabric. I ordered this towel from Amazon and it worked great. I was able to get them very clean and after steaming and drying they were very smooth.

I ordered 2 blow up mats and was able to fly all four seats but nothing left. In hindsight, I recommend ordering an extra cloth or two and washing them with the others so you have extra cloth if needed. You can always make something else with the extra fabric – like a pillow, curtain or table runner!

If you have a full-load washing machine with an agitator that allows you to stand up and drop the fabric, you can air dry the fabric in the washer. However, we had just purchased a new top-loader and infuser, so I had to use my bottom tub for infusing fabric. It really looked like a crime in our bathroom with all the bleach bottles, rubber gloves and a bathroom full of detergent boxes (used to keep the water temperature warm enough to saturate the fabric).
