Start by cutting the four 4″ x 4″ pieces for the legs (A) to about 29-1/2″ long. Use a table saw to cut the leg pieces to the final width and thickness. Use a miter saw to cut the pieces to the final length (see the drawing plan of the harvest program and places).

For the rest of the table base, cut the long skirts (B), short skirts (C), corner brackets (D), and braces (E) to width and length. Cut a 45-degree miter on both ends of the corner arms (as shown in the project diagram) and drill a 1/4-inch hole in the center of the face of each arm.

Drill screw holes with blind holes in long and short skirts and stretchers (project image 2). You will need to set up your pocket hole tool to pre-pierce 1 inch thick material. Sand all parts with 220 grit sandpaper.

Using wood glue and 2-inch self-tapping screws (see project diagram), begin building the base by attaching the long and short skirts to the legs. Turn the hems 1/4 inch from the outside of the legs.

Prepare four 2″ x 10″ boards for the top boards (F). Cut boards to rough length, cut to width and then cut to finished length. Sand the wings with 220 grit sandpaper.

To begin the finishing work, use 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges on the table top and base to create a smooth feel. Then wipe the wood with a cleaning cloth. Apply wood conditioner to the boards. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid stains from softwood stains. Using a foam brush, apply interior wood stain to the boards. When the stain is dry, apply three coats of semi-gloss polyurethane to the base and slats. Dry each layer. Lightly sand between coats with 320 grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots.

Place some polished 2″ x 4″ pieces of lumber on the floor and place your boards on top, preferably side down. These parts protect the finished parts from scratching the floor. Match the ends of the strips and connect them together. Center the table assembly on the slats and attach the table base to the slats through the skirts and slats with 2-inch hole screws.

With the top secured, add a damp cloth to the bottom of each table leg. Tip Can’t find 4″ x 4″ lumber in your area? Use 2″ by 4″ boards instead. Cut two 31-inch long boards for each leg and laminate them together with wood glue and a stapler. Once the glue is set, tear the 3-1/2-inch plywood sheet 3 inches wide, leaving a 1/4-inch strip from each edge. Expand the laminated blank to 28-1/2 inches and you have a 3-inch square foot.

For the chairs, use the same material preparation process as you did for the table: cut the piece 1 inch longer than needed to cut it to width, then cut to finished length. Prepare the material and cut the legs (A) and the support (B) as shown in the cutting diagram. Using a miter saw and referring to the project diagram, cut a 6 degree angle at the top of the legs. Place the two legs flat on the work table. Cut a 1/4-inch-thick gap between the legs. Lay the bracket flat over the legs and use a corner cutter on the top of the legs to mark the angle on the top of the arm.

Cut the corner of the bracket with a chisel. Drill two holes to attach the seats to the brackets. Sand the legs and bones with a 180 grit.
