How To Make Bar Stool – It’s been a while since I did a clean 2×4 project. The last thing I did was my bathroom cabinet and it’s my favorite project. I think it’s so satisfying to turn scrap 2x4s into beautiful, home-worthy pieces of furniture. I think it gives a sense of accomplishment.

The project I wanted to do was a long bar table 24. I went with a slightly shorter height than I’m usually used to for bar stools since our new home kitchen counters are 36” tall behind them. I did a stick project before, but it was too big to use here. Therefore, a short bar plate is required.

You will need about 8′ 2x4s for each bar plate. I say almost because if you add the random knots often found in pine 2x4s, you end up with less. I chose to cut around them and so ended up with a lot of scraps. Even with plenty left over, these only cost $21.51 to make. Try and rate this wood size stick in the store! I’m sure it won’t be anywhere near that price.

I could cut them to all the wrong sizes that were different from the knots. I have an older model cobalt saw and I’m pretty sure they don’t sell this saw anymore. It has a lot of flexibility in the sliding mechanism and rarely catches corners. So I only use a saw for rough cuts.

Blanks can be cut to width. First, a quarter-inch width cut is made to remove rounded edges.

Then the seat belt had to tear it into a million pieces. 1″ wide and 1-1/2″ tall. I cut these, running the grain vertically with a 1-1/2″ measurement.

They are always turned right side out, the upper side being the good side and can be stitched. I used one end of the scrap piece as a clamp on the side so that the pressure wouldn’t go to the glazed panel.

Cut blanks for legs 1-1/2″ x 1-1/2″. Here you can see that digging barrels at your home station can sometimes pay off in your choice of wood. On my last wood trip, I saw 30-40 boards and only bought 10. This board was better than most.

After the leg shells were split and cut to length, I ran them through a thickness gauge to make sure all the short measurements were the same. This will make it easier to cut the half circle.

As much as possible, I saw all my final heights on the table and my cross section. More accurate than Miter saw.

All parts of the frame need to be turned in half at the end. Legs are only needed on one side, but some need to be cut on both sides. This is easy to do after the dado layer is built and raised to half the thickness of the material.

The legs take two and a half laps on the surfaces closest to the center of the material. To find the correct position for the dado row in use, I called the kerf-style block. This video explains it better than the text of this article.

All half loops can be cut and joined to two legs to make two long rail leg assemblies. To make sure the chair has a smooth and accurate joining surface, I have to cut off the top of my leg assembly and glue the two together and then clamp them at the four foot level. This provides a perfectly flat surface for reference against the wall.

For the top of the leg assemblies for the chair, I can start with short rails and continue with glue.

Back seat. I decided to use scrap wood again as a prop to avoid damaging the seat top and clamp heads.

After my fabric was dry, I used my cutting board to cut the top to its final length. I also used a bar to split the top to the final width.

Most of the links were provided by low-cost airlines. It takes a little time to sand.

I used a bit on my router to break off the hard edges. I also made the mistake of cutting the normal path from the first line, which caused some pieces to stick out. Cutting the rest solved the problem. Finally, only one of the plates is completed on the edge of the road.

I usually use American Minwax primer stains with good results. I decided to change it up a bit and use Carrington’s Rustoleum paint, which turned out too dark for my liking. I topped it off with a coat of Target’s Multipurpose Liquid Finish EM6000 Satin Lacquer. It’s a little pricey, but I love my results.

Lastly, I’m not 100% happy with the color of the stain, but that’s no one’s fault but mine. I went with the more familiar style because it did a better job of showing the grain. But that’s not a deal breaker. I am happy with the end result and will definitely use it in my home.

This step is optional. You saw in the video that I cut the top of my top rails at 7°. This is so that the top surface of my top rails is flush with the bottom of the seat. If you don’t have a desk or don’t want to do this step. During installation, you can arrange the top of the rail, the outer edge and the top of the legs.

If you want to pay attention to the details of your feet, now is the time. I used a simple strap on the outer edge of my leg. The router went, I rounded all the edges of the seat.
