We had to sit around our kitchen island for a while. I looked at different furniture stores and online and the cheapest I could find to meet our needs was $100, so I decided I could do something in the garage.
How To Build A Stool Out Of 2×4
So after doing some research and looking at different pictures and videos I found this design. Made from a few screws, wood glue and a 2×4. 2 and 1/2 exactly.
I Made A Cedar Utility Stool From A Single 2×4
If you’re interested in doing something like this, I’ve put together a quick plan and list of spaces to add to the end of this tutorial.
Start by measuring 18″ on your first 2×4, make a mark on the miter saw and cut. Do this 4 times. This will be your post.
Then cut 3 lengths at 8 1/2″ These will be your other two bottom slats and the top strap.
How To Make Bar Stools
I started by aligning one side of each piece using only the table saw. Then I broke everything down like this:
To get the radius of the seat I took a piece of scrap wood at least 18″ long. I made two marks, one 0″ and the other 18″. I found the center, 9″ and made a mark.
I wanted the seat to be 1/2″ total concave, so I made a 9″, 1/2″ mark in the middle.

To get a nice smooth radius, I used a handsaw and rested the handsaw against the vise near the zero mark, then bent the saw until it went through what we did with one hand and traced it to -9″ and 1/2. “and then the mark 18”. I took a pencil and drew a line.
I basically just bent over the saw ….. Difficult to explain …. if you are still confused, the video I linked at the end of the Instructable will give you a better idea.
THEN… Cut out the pattern on a saw (or you can use a jigsaw) and drew the 8 pieces for the seats and then cut them out as well. I drilled pocket holes in the bottom of the seat, glue everything together using lots of glue, and then screwed everything together and then clamped for more security.

Find the centers of all the remaining pieces (LEGS ARE INCOMPLETE!) and make a few holes for the pockets. I drilled the top and bottom of the top gusset, just the bottom of the bottom rails. Then sand everything. I just sanded it with 120 grit and it looked pretty good. But you may want to use a finer grit… I was not very picky about sanding.
Since the strap and slats are thinner than the legs, I basted the pieces on the inside to give the outside a nice “carved” look. When I went to screw the screws in the pocket I used a lot of clamps to help make everything as straight as possible. I applied some glue to the edges of all the supports and slats before screwing everything together. Be sure to wipe off excess glue with a damp cloth after unscrewing.
After your seat was dry, I took off the excess glue and then sanded everything down with a flap disc. It is very aggressive and gets the job done quickly, but you really have to be careful how much you push it as it eats the wood very quickly. I found it did a FABULOUS job of making the seat nice and even. Make sure you wear a dust mask when using it as it creates a ton of chips.

I should also note that I need to use a guard on the grinder. It annoys me sometimes but there are ways to deal with it… After the sanding looked good, I used my orbital sander to smooth out any rough spots left by the sanding.
With the seat upside down, turn the frame upside down and place the frame on the seat. Find the center of each side and drill a few pocket holes in the inner frame supports. Then attach the four pocket screws to the seat.
I notice you also used wood glue, but I don’t have a picture of it…sorry.

If you are painting, you should first use a wood care product… A wood care product will help you get rid of the stained spots you notice when you paint soft wood. I didn’t use any wood conditioner and ended up with a stained area. It doesn’t matter to me anymore since my wife wants me to paint it black when I’m done… hahaha
I used the JACOBEAN Minwax in training… It’s nice, but I have to admit that we would have done better if it was black.
The final step will be my cut list and plan. I made these plans completely myself and all the Instructables and tutorials were followed exactly. I hope you like it!

I recently made a stool similar to this when my wife needed a small stool. Small, about eight inches long. The internet search for stool ideas went like this. stunning to say the least. What caught my eye were the beautiful proportions of the Japanese bathroom stool.
The list of equipment below is what I use, but there are other ways to make this stool. Power tools are generally more accurate and require much less work, but many of these cuts can be made with a circular saw and sanding can be done by hand. (If you’re a masochist) I personally hate sandblasting.

Please note that the pin must be oven dried and is shorter than the standard 8 feet (92 5/8″).
Since the edges are rounded and we need glue, we will need to cut the edges of the boards. This can be done with a circular saw, if you follow certain precautions.
You’re wrapping three 28″ boards and you see big gaps when you put them side by side. Move them around, rotate them, or do something else to find the best combination that works. Remember how wood works with side-by-side boards. Number them in order they can come back after sanding. Yes, it’s time to use a planer or sander to flatten it. If you don’t have a planer or an electric jointer, I found that tapering a board works well. Sandpaper on a flat surface and move the wood Back and forth works pretty well Use some coarse sandpaper It won’t be perfect that way, but it will be good enough to glue and clamp them together.

Apply glue to one side of each joint and assemble. The manufacturers of the glue say it only takes three hours to cure. I usually leave it on overnight.
After the glue dries and the clamps are removed, you should have a board about 9 1/2″ x 28″. Remember how awful side grinding was? Yep, it’s sanding time again. This time, it is top and bottom to remove not only small ledges that can be seen between the boards, but also surface debris to land in the beautiful wood.
I used an 80-grit belt sander to remove the worst rough edges and then switched to a 120-grit orbital sander.

I used a table saw to make these cross cuts, but you can also use a circular saw here.
First, straighten one end of the gluing sheet so you can measure accurately. The top plate is 11 inches wide. Then set the saw to about 10 degrees. This 10 degree angle can be 9 or 11 degrees, but make sure all the cuts in the angle are the same. Do not adjust the saw until you are done. As long as the cuts are the same for all angled cuts, everything works perfectly.
