How To Make Side Table At Home – I went several months without an extra table in the living room when I moved out of my mother’s house and got my own place. When I was younger I thought it was useless things to have at home for beauty and I have more important things to spend my money on. I quickly realized how important extra tables are when you want a snack while watching a movie or have a place for your book. Not long after, I bought a couple of side tables from thrift stores. This tree stump table from Home Depot is so creative! What a great way to add some wood charm to your living room! Trey and I wanted an extra table (or two) next to an oversized chair in our living room. Often one of us (or both if we’re comfortable) sits in this chair while we eat dinner and watch the Daily Show. Problem? There’s nowhere to temporarily put your cup or plate when you’re done. We have three dogs (three!) so not having space for the empty glass or plate can be dangerous.
We used to have these DIY tables next to the chair. But then I put them in the bedroom because I liked how they looked next to a wicker chair. I really like the height of the stumps next to the chair, they are not so tall as to impede our walking range in this room. So I decided to make us an extra table (or two).
They are very much modeled after this board by Jonathan Adler. I first saw this table at her house (in her book) and loved it! At first I thought it might be vintage, but of course it was his own design. So nice. This is how I create my tables.

1.) Supplies Needed: Three sheets of aluminum (typically available in 3ft x 2ft sizes), two logs of wood, wood stain, polyurethane, heavy duty adhesive*. Not illustrated: Metal snips, work gloves, embroidery thread, tape, scissors, spray primer, brass spray paint (or any color you like), sandpaper and RotoZip RotoSaw+.
2.) Cut the sheets to the desired height. For the larger of my two I needed two sheets. So if you’re making a larger side table, make sure you cut both to the same height. Always wear work gloves when working with metal – these are sharp objects! Try to cut off the top edge of the design to avoid jagged edges.
3.) Attach the metal sheets to form loops with embroidery thread. This is also the case with this guide. Use neutral colored yarn. But we’ll draw that later so it doesn’t have to match perfectly. I taped one edge of the yarn as I worked, making it easier to thread in and out of the veneer.

4. Metal table base. Be sure to check in and out. Once dry (check drying time on bottle) spray color of your choice. I chose brassy yellow, but you can make the gold lighter, tinted or even white.
5.) Sand your logs so they are very smooth to the touch. Paint them the color you want and let them dry completely. Check the drying time of the container. Then coated with polyurethane.

6.) Place the metal base (section down) on top of the trunk. Draw a circle around where the metal touches. I used RotoZip RotoSaw+ to cut a slot on this line. Squeeze some crazy glue* into the cut and then insert the metal base into the cut. This is made easier with a partner (thanks Elsie!).

*I originally intended to use JB glue. Soldering because he recommended it to me when I was buying supplies at the hardware store. When I first started using it I found it was too dirty to get into the cutting slot cleanly. So I used crazy glue.
Once your wood is dry, you’re good to go. If you glue the cut side of the metal to the top wood ring of the boards you shouldn’t have a problem with them scraping the ground. Remember to pick them up when you move (they’re not really heavy so it’s easy) or put a mat over them for extra security. Enjoy your new window display! I know we will. 🙂 xo.
