Building a Live Edge Epoxy River coffee table seems pretty easy, doesn’t it? Take a live piece of wood, cut it in half, make a mold, pour resin, remove the mold … easy. Well, it wasn’t like that for me. If you’re thinking of making your own epoxy river table, you might want to learn from my mistakes.

The basic steps to building a live edge river table seem pretty simple, but it’s not a cheap project, so you don’t want to screw it up. Do your research. I didn’t do any research before. I always like to jump straight into a project and then learn from my mistakes. In retrospect, here are some guides I should have read in the past:
I started this coffee table with live edge cherry wood that I bought from The Wood Source in Ottawa. It is about four feet long and 18 inches wide. Tony cut it in the middle of the table saw, then I leaned over and removed the skin from the live edge.
Next I made the shapes. I used 3/4″ melamine strips for the sides of the pans and 1/4″ melamine for the bottom.

I figured the 1/4″ melamine for the base would be smooth and the coffee table would come off when the resin cured. Don’t!
The 1/4″ MDF didn’t come back in one piece. No, it was over a thousand pieces. And that was only after a few hours of hammering and using a belt sander to remove some. use more thick melamine for molds!
After I prepared the cherry wood and built the mold, it was time to pour the resin. First, I mixed a small amount of two-part epoxy and primed the bottom of the mold. This way you won’t get bubbles under the coffee table. Then I carefully placed two pieces of raw edge wood into the molds and pressed them into the mold.

Next it’s time to mix the resin for the river. I mixed a liter of resin and added blue clear dye and a little green dye. The plan is to make the river light blue to look like a tropical ocean. I just thought the amount of dye I added was the perfect color. It looked good when I mixed it, but when the resin set, the color changed. It looks more like a toxic dump in a river than a Jamaican beach and I don’t like it.
My goal is to make a pour of resin, get a perfectly smooth glass finish and finish. It didn’t happen. Like I said, I spent a lot of time sanding the melamine underneath and then I spent a lot of time sanding the top to get it off. This is what the surface looks like after sanding…
Now let’s go back to the color issue, because the story behind this coffee table actually turns out to be a good one.
Oval Table Blue Epoxy Resin Coffee Table Made Of Acacia Wood
To set the color I mixed a small amount of epoxy and added a lot of clear blue color and a small drop of opaque black pigment. I poured it under the coffee table, in the stream side of the coffee table.
After curing, I sanded the resin to give it a matte finish. From the top of the table, the color deepened to a beautiful azure.
The final step for this resin coffee table is to pour a primer coat on top. I mixed the resin, poured it on top and spread it over the top and edges of a straight piece of cardboard.

You can pop all the bubbles with a blowtorch or a straw. Once you are happy with the top and make sure there are no leaks on the sides or bottom, leave it! Leave it for 24 hours without touching it.
My last mistake was that I (or Tony, I don’t know who to blame) should have touched the resin before it hardened and left a fingerprint. I was thinking about sanding it all down and giving it a matte finish, but the glossy epoxy looks great. So I sanded the top with 400 grit paper to remove fingerprints and poured another coat of epoxy. The result is perfect, with no fingerprints and a smooth and shiny finish.
Don’t your socks get ruined when you spend all the time working on the table top so that the screw comes out of the top when you put the legs on? No, Tony is no joke. This has never happened to me. In fact, assembling the legs is the neatest part of this coffee table.
Fire Epoxy Table — Blacktail Studio
I bought the metal legs from Lowe’s and painted them matte black. To install it, I drilled a hole and used 5/8″ screws to attach the legs to the top.
Overall, I’m very happy with how this vintage coffee table turned out. I made some mistakes, but I was able to correct them and it still turned out to be a beautiful piece of furniture. Have you ever made a vintage coffee table? Is your build smoother than my experience?
