“I repeated those steps to make the second one, making sure it mirrored the first one and wasn’t the same,” Wilkerson said.

“I loaded all my darts on my mobile workbench and rolled them onto my router table where I used a 1/2″ infinity round over a bit on both long edges.”

“I started with the back deck bar, then jumped forward and went back from there,” he said, adding, “I cut a spacer to make this line easier.”

“What I did was use two boards, cut them to different lengths and then glue them together to make a half lap,” Wilkerson said. “If I’m using thicker cedar boards, I carved half of it to make this section.”
There is a lot of weight in this part so when tracing it, tilt the template as much as you can to get enough straight grain along the rocker. Make sure the lower curve has no bumps and before attaching the legs, clamp all the pieces, place it on the floor and test its ability to shake.

“For this part, I put the wood glue down and then connected the short legs to the long legs, making sure everything lines up,” says Wilkerson.

“At first I was going to do blind tenons to attach the arms to the legs, but since the screws were exposed on the seat I thought they would blend in as well,” he said. Obviously offset here as well as sitting below the surface, giving it a nice smooth feel. Then on the back I drilled a hole and attached it with a carriage bolt.”

“I think Western Red Cedar is beautiful so I put a clear coat on it to keep its beautiful color,” Wilkerson said. “If you don’t know, Western Red Cedar is naturally impervious to rot, so if you plan to expose your chair to the elements, it’s a good choice of material.”
