How To Replace Ceiling Fan Reverse Switches

If your ceiling fan’s pull chain has broken because it was pulled from the switch, there’s an easy way to fix it. Switch on the ceiling fan and remove the broken piece of chain and replace it with a longer one. If your switch is completely broken, purchase a replacement from a local hardware store before removing the old one and installing the new switch. For safety be sure to turn off the power source before opening the ceiling fan.

To replace a ceiling fan pull switch, you must remove the old switch, disconnect the wire, and connect the new switch directly to the terminals. To start, turn off the circuit breaker leading to your fan so you don’t put yourself at risk of electric shock. Then put the cover on the fan and unscrew the nut on the outside of the pull switch so you can get it out. Be sure to write down the color of each wire and what point they connect to, as you will need this information later. Once you remove the pull knob, take it to a home improvement store and purchase a new one. New switches must be identical in size, speed, and number of watts, otherwise they will not be compatible. When installing a new switch, refer to your notes so that you connect the colored wires to the appropriate equipment. In this ceiling fan wiring diagram, the blue wire on the ceiling fan is connected to the load side of the wall switch, so it controls the light on the fan. The black fan wire is connected to LINE which allows the pull chain switch on the fan to control the fan motor independently of the wall switch.

It is not uncommon to use the white wire as the hot wire or line in a switch. However, it is necessary to define a new white line with a color other than white, gray or green. The ceiling fan wiring diagram above shows power going to the switch box first and then the hot switch and neutral in two conductors to the ceiling box. This way, the black wire for the fan motor and the blue wire for the ceiling fan light are both connected to the load wire from the wall switch.

Both the fan and the light are controlled by the same wall switch, but the wall switch can be omitted and the fan and light can be controlled separately using a pull chain switch.

A remote control unit can be attached to this ceiling fan. Wall switches should only be placed in the up position.

If you don’t need a remote control but do want the option of controlling the entire fan at a wall switch, you should look for a ceiling fan with wall controls that will work better with existing wiring. In some cases, it’s just a remote control that fits into the wall like a regular wall switch.

The method shown above is the method that would be used to make the neutral conductor from the power source in the ceiling fan box to the switch box available. The blue fan wire connects to the red load wire from the wall switch. The black fan cable is connected to the cable. The wall switch controls the light on the ceiling fan and the pull chain switch controls the fan motor independently of the wall switch.

With the hot and neutral in the switch box, it is possible to use the power there for other things like electric valves. The picture above shows connecting the red wire from the wall switch to the blue wire from the ceiling fan to control the light. The fan motor is controlled independently of the wall switch by using a pull chain switch on the fan as the black fan wire is connected directly to the line.

A three-core cable should be used to bring the line and center with load conductors up to the ceiling box.
