I have a basic rule for choosing an awesome layout There are no straight edges Why? Because trees don’t grow on perfectly straight edges, and rivers don’t run perfectly straight When we make one of these tables, we try to imitate nature as much as possible And the part where the experimenter cuts the limb will not feel right You might think that you can easily add it to your natural edge by mimicking the natural curve. However, it never feels right in my opinion This is because all the natural curves in the wood have the same natural curves in the grain If we try to simulate a curve without the correct grain, it will look like we faked it, which we did. This can be a pain, especially if you only have one or two boards and both of them cut straight
I don’t have any hard and fast rules except to avoid straight edges I don’t like large areas of exposed resin if I can help it (looks ridiculous and is expensive). So ideally I’d like to match one curve to another piece that curves at roughly the same level Thus, it naturally mimics a real river If you’re stuck with your design, in the past I’ve taken inspiration from aerial photos of real rivers. This can be especially useful when you add islands or other pieces to your river to simulate a bay.

When your layout is complete, mark your shape on the board with a chalk or pencil I mark my lines 2″ in length and width. That way I have an inch margin for error on either side. Whether you’re using a jigsaw, track saw, or regular circular saw, just cut along the lines you’ve marked. Don’t worry about making them perfect After pouring the epoxy the table will be cut to final shape However, the cleaner and straighter you can make this cut, the less epoxy you use

However, I always seal my edges The main reason not to curl the edges is that you can get a good bond without caulking Because the resin has a chance to penetrate the wood really well The main reason for sealing the edges is to prevent any stains that may penetrate the colored resin wood. Especially light wood Powder pigments won’t stain like liquid paint if you choose not to seal the edges Another benefit of edge sealing for clear tables is that you will get fewer bubbles in your epoxy. Air is trapped in the raw wood, and if you don’t seal your edges, that air will escape and become suspended in the finished epoxy pour. You will often hear that people have a problem with “microblebs”. Sealing will greatly reduce the number of microbubbles

I have changed my seal method over the last year I worked with the folks at Liquid Glass Epoxy to find a way to get a bond that didn’t seal the edges.
I completely seal the top, bottom and sides with the same deep pour epoxy I use on my stream section. Usually with a passive brush or foam roller Nothing special here, just cover the whole piece I then let the epoxy harden for about 12-18 hours At this point, the epoxy will partially set and harden, but not solid This means it’s good enough to prevent stains and air seals, but tough enough that we can still get a good “chemical” bond. As with my previous method of sealing with epoxy, let it dry completely, scrape lightly and then water. This is called a “mechanical” connection
However, you have to weigh it carefully So I recommend preparing everything else before this step

I make my shapes out of melamine It’s very cheap, readily available at Home Depot, and I can usually get 2-3 tables out of it before throwing it away.
All you have to do is make a box the size you want your finished table to be, and any cushions you add. If I want a finished table 96×42″, I cut my boards 98×44 and make my box to fit 98×44. I add at least 2 inches to my sides to the thickness of my boards. So if my boards are 2 inches thick, I add 4 to my sides. Cut to inches
