How To Make A Sewing Machine Table – This was my summer project at my non-air conditioned garage shop in central Virginia. Judy asked for a sewing closet for her quilting work. She liked the basic concept of Rockler’s plan, but she felt the legroom was too narrow. Instead of building two plywood boxes for the base of the kit, I built the base using legs, mortise and tenon subframes, and sheets of plywood. I also added a back sash to expand the work area. A plywood box for storing the server and drawers simply bolts to the base. The Hohn Lift is solidly built and works as advertised. I finished everything with 4-5 coats of Arm-R-Seal Oil and Varnish Topcoat.
It turned out well in the end, although I would do a few things differently (and fix a few mistakes) if I ever did the project again. The decisive factor is that Judy likes the look of the piece of furniture, appreciates the individual working height and is happy about the additional space. Best of all, our dining table no longer has to double as a sewing station!

Antique Singer Sewing Machine Table Makeover — Ashley French
This is not our first attempt at making a table for a sewing machine. A few years ago I decided that I needed a table for my sewing machine that would sit flush with my sewing machine’s needle/needle plate. Basically, I wanted a flat surface to sew on. I also wanted it to be big enough to hold anything from the Lindsay wristlet to a blanket. My husband (Brian) and I worked together to find an inexpensive solution.
The picture above shows our solution. I can’t remember now how much we paid for the folding table and all that other “stuff” you see to raise the surface to my car level, but it wasn’t much. And it worked. . .
. . . at least it worked quite well. My machine has a knee lift which I love but every time I used the knee lift my car would move. I’ve gotten very used to sliding the machine into place after every 3 or 4 leg raise with knee raises. It actually got really annoying. It was also quite frustrating to hold my machine flat on the foam so that it was flush with the work surface.
Cabinet Insets & Inserts
I kept looking at sewing cabinets that included a cutout for mounting my sewing machine to make up for the sewing area, but at least $500 and then another $75 for a custom insert for my machine. There should have been a cheaper solution.
Thank goodness for Pinterest! I found this blog post by Palak from Make it Handmade showing how she and her husband made a sewing machine table with a cutout and shelf specifically for their machine. I showed the blog post to Brian and he was just as excited as I was so we went to Ikea for the INGO table!
Palak provides links to two different blog posts that actually have more detailed instructions on how to make this sewing machine table. Brian used blog posts and his own ingenuity to design my table. I recommend reading all three blog posts (Make it Handmade, Blue Dinosaurs, and From Marta with Love) as they all have great ideas and suggestions.
Diy Treadle Sewing Machine Base Desk
To make a handbag I usually use 2-3 different colors of yarn with matching spools. I often only change the bobbin when sewing a bag, so I needed easy access to the bobbin. Brian and I found a solution that allows me to easily change the bobbin without having to lift the sewing machine off the table each time. Brian cut a notch in the table apron and the shelf my car is on. Now I can easily change the coil!
Due to my measurement error, we had to make the opening for the knee lift a bit larger. :
Brian would have liked the toggle hole to be more centered but that was my fault as I decided to help out at this point and didn’t mark the correct location for the toggle – oops! I should have let him.
How To Repurpose A Vintage Sewing Machine Table As A Desk

To make it easier to plug in and unplug my sewing machine and turn it on and off, Brian added a cutout in a special cutout for my machine.
After Brian finished all the custom cuts and shelving work, I had to finish it off with paint or stain. I decided to paint the table – I love stained wood but I couldn’t resist and had to add a painted detail from the template.
