How To Make A Folding Workbench – While shopping at Home Depot, I came across a bench they were selling. It was a folding structure and was mostly 2×4’s, one 2×6’s and an MDF top. It was $79. I looked at him and thought, “I can do that.”
I cut two 72″ pieces of 2×4 to make two 72″ pieces and two 24″ pieces. Together they form a frame.

Saw 4 2″x4″ by 34 for the legs. Then I cut the corners into rough triangles to make the next part easier.

Then I attached all four legs together and sanded the ends of the triangle. This will allow them to move on later.
Then I cut four pieces of 20″ 7/8″ fabric, glued and screwed them to the support legs. One bottom and one in the middle for each pair of legs.
I put them where I wanted them, drilled through both thicknesses of the bolt and secured them, then put the bolts in with washers and nuts, screwed them in, and screwed the next one in!

Then I took some pallet wood I had lying around, cut it down to 27 inches and bolted it to the top!
Now you are ready! Either fold it up and put it away, or start working on your next project with the workbench! Since I have a small garage and not enough space for everything, I need a folding bench. I rejected the “Folding = weak” rule, so I went with a 2.5″ laminate top (beech) and 2 cheaper folding legs (spruce). Top 60″ (L) x 25.5″ (W) x 2.5″ (D) and 36″ (36) tall. I used wide steel hinges (top) and brass hinges (legs). I used Titebond II glue.
I sawed the beech boards by hand with a circular saw and then with a band saw to get as many 65 inch pieces as possible. Then I connected and planed all the small boards. I then tore it back into 2-3/4″ strips (2 1/2″ + extra material) making 20 total. I made 5 larger laminated boards 4 at a time, then joined and replanned the boards.

Finally, I used a cookie cutter to glue the 5 boards to the top of the 20 piece laminate. This helped me get a flat surface, which is very helpful as the only way to get a flat surface after this point is by hand planing. In the end I added two pieces of trim, no glue, just a ridge and groove, then bolted.
Then many, many hours of hand planing #6 through #4, followed by machine sanding, hand sanding and finishing. I drilled 3/4″ holes for the brass dogs.
I added 2 herringbone crosspieces where the hinges would be attached to evenly distribute the load from the hinges above. The wooden part of the vice is taken from the same beech boards.

The legs are simple pieces of fir attached to the wall. They would look better if they were tied in, but I preferred to make them wider so they wouldn’t fit behind the folded top, so they slide out when the bench is closed.
As for oiling, the old Italian carpenter’s rule is: “Once a week, once a week in a month, once a month in a year, and once a year in a lifetime.”
So, 5 layers of tung oil were first applied and removed after 30 minutes. Sand with 600 grit between each coat. Then the remaining 7 layers were applied with a clean cloth (very thin wetting layers, without additional wiping). No wax or other finishes, just tung oil. This is a long process, but it can be restored at any time.
