How To Make A Wireless Charging Table – Smartphones are expensive and exclusive. Wired charging is annoying and annoying. Wireless chargers reduce some of this, but leave a lot to be desired. I decided to eliminate all these complaints, and by building a wireless charger into a night stand or table, I can now leave my phone on the bed at night and watch the battery up – like magic.
For this tutorial, I’ll show you how to build a wireless Qi charger for your desk or night stand. The results are clean, neat and fun. Done right, it can make your phone charging experience amazing.

In terms of project materials, you will need the following ready-to-use tools. You can hunt around for a MakerSpace with a ShopBot CNC router, but you can (in theory) get your woodworking outside.
How To Choose Between Wired And Wireless Charging
Come in! Pry off as much of the plastic housing as you can with your screwdriver, then screw on the rest. Powerboat housing is in two parts and you have to separate the two. With the PCB exposed (extending the top of the case), use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the PowerBot’s casing. What you see in my last picture is where the magic happens – that’s the induction coil you want! Your Qi compatible phone has a similar coin to accept the electronic power supply made by PowerBot.
The induction system only works within a limited range. The coin on your phone can’t be too far from the PowerBot coil, so removing the PowerBot box reduces unnecessary interference between the two coins. This will take effect in the next step…
As you can see from these pictures, I confirmed that the Sticky PowerBot works on my phone, and I confirmed that the PowerBot continues to charge my phone when I hold the phone above the induction coil. I estimate from this test that it continues to charge up to 0.3 inches. If your phone has a problem, this can be tough – you’ll really need to use a CNC router to get it right. If you keep your phone intact, you can remove it with a manual router (or a chisel!).
How Does Wireless Charging Work? Everything You Need To Know
I measured the size of the Sticky PowerBot, and account for the room needed for the included microUSB cable. After making a quick 2D in Adobe Illustrator, I imported the vector lines into my school’s ShopBot software and figured out how to cut the router (with a 1 cm piece of wood, I cut 0.8 cm. This left me with a little more than 0.1 cm of wiggle room for charging.), the work began.
With my CNC files included, your power boat will fit perfectly! You don’t have to use a lot of force to power the PowerBot into the slot, and the microUSB cable should fit snugly. Make sure the USB port is connected before sliding the Sticky PowerBot on.
After making sure the powerbot is connected and working (the red light in the second picture means “ready to charge!”), use your heat gun to (carefully) attach the power supply. This is key – you don’t want your hidden charger to fall out in a magnetic field. I just put it in/around the existing hole and my PowerBot is holding up fine. Keep your MicroUSB cable plugged in during this process, but keep the 5v AC/USB adapter unplugged from the wall.

Wireless chargers work mainly on the principle of “electromagnetic induction”. As it passes through a coil of wire, it creates a “magnetic field”.
A similar charging device is located under the cover of the phone. When a mobile phone is placed on top of a wireless charger, a magnetic field is generated that generates electricity in the receiver, which is converted and controlled by the electric charge on the phone. We started by grabbing this cheap table from IKEA. Our table had a round iron that we removed and used as a template to trace our tree. The ¼ inch wood you choose will be the top of the table, so make sure the wood is thicker than ½ inch. Continue to find the dimensions of your table on both sides.
Before the cut, we also pointed out where the wireless charger would go at ½ inch. We put the charger aside to make room for other things on your desk. A good tip for cutting the front of the table is to first drill a hole in each corner of the square, then go in with the jigsaw and cut out the rest of the pieces. Be sure to drill the corner holes to fit the jigsaw blade.
Once it was cut, we gave it all a quick sanding. Next, if the pan is the same size, make sure your two sizes are the same, and before cutting the circle, go ahead and add a free level of wood to fit the two pieces together.
