Making a card table is a weekend project. To make the table, pieces of cardboard need to be cut and glued together, but waiting for them to dry between the different steps takes too much time.

You can use any box to create your coffee or side table. Choose the size that best fits your space, keeping in mind that a table is typically 16 to 18 inches (40-45 cm) high and a side table is 24 inches (60 cm) high.

Determine which side of the box will be above the table and close it by taping the flaps together. After applying the glue, you can turn the box containing the books upside down for some weight until the glue dries.
Once the top of the box is attached, draw a bow on one side of the box. Leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) between the top of the arch and the top of the box and 2 1/2 inches (6 cm) between the sides of the arch and the sides of the box.
Draw and cut the same curved shape on the opposite side. You can use the inside of the cut curve to outline the shape on the other side of the box. Cut the second curve.

Take another piece of card. This can be a sheet of cardboard or a box that you have flattened. Create a bow section that fits inside the box.
The size of the arch is the same as the size of the box and the arch frame is slightly smaller to fit inside the box.
Inside the box, measure the width and height and draw a rectangle on the cardboard. Mark the center of the rectangle and draw an arc with the same dimensions as before.

Make sure to use the cardboard box vertically. You can find lines on any piece of cardboard, these lines should be placed vertically when drawing the bow, as the card will resist in that direction.
To check fit, cut the bow piece and slide it into the box. Place it side by side, adjust and re-trim if necessary.
It is important that this piece is the right size because you will use it as a template to create reinforcement inside the box to make the table sturdy.
How To Make Diy Cardboard Table
If the size of the first inner curve fits the box correctly, report the size on the cardboard to make 5-7 more curves. The number of inner curves you need depends on the size of your table.
Estimate that you need 2 1/2 inches (6 cm) of internal curvature for a sturdy table.
All curves should be drawn and cut following the vertical lines of the cardboard box. That is, if in doubt, look for small ripples on the inside of the card above the bow piece.

Use a glue gun to fix the curves inside the table. Place the first one in the center and glue all three sides to the box.
Repeat adjusting the other curves. Try to space them 2 1/2 inches apart. (6 cm) apart.
You can see that I added two rows of rectangles between the curves, and you can add more if you think the table needs it.

Time to finish the arc. Cut a rectangle of cardboard the same width as the table and long enough to cover the arch.
This time the cardboard lines should be placed to help bend the cardboard to follow the curve of the bow.
Add white glue to the sides and edges of the inner arch, attach the cardboard box, and hold it in place with masking tape until the glue dries.

The reason for using white glue is that it doesn’t dry as fast as a glue gun. Since there is a lot of surface area to glue and I had to fit the cardboard around the arch, it was more practical to use white glue.
Cut the wings below the width of the table legs, fold and glue. Do this on both sides.
This step is optional, but I wanted to make sure it lay nice and flat on the table without any gaps, so I glued an extra layer of cardboard on top of the table.

Making furniture out of cardboard is great, but you need to make sure it lasts over time. Once you’ve created a solid cardboard structure, it’s time to look at the finish.
It goes without saying that a cardboard table should be resistant to food and drink stains and easy to clean.
To make wallpaper, cut pieces of newspaper, dip them in wallpaper glue and cover the table with them.

Smooth the paper down gently so there are no wrinkles or bubbles. Apply multiple layers of paper to get a nice smooth finish that doesn’t show the texture of the cardboard.
I applied 3 coats and then a stone effect spray paint. Finally, I apply the last layer of acrylic lacquer.
You can use a powder mix or a ready-to-use tile grout that you apply directly to the cardboard with a spatula. It’s so much fun to do, it’s like the icing on a cake.

It is a good idea to remove the masking tape before applying the tile grout. Apply one coat and let dry.
Remove the dust and apply two coats of paint. I didn’t varnish this table, but you could if you wanted to.
Using paper mache is easy, but it’s a long process. Apply multiple layers of paper and paint for a good finish. I love that it’s cheap and the table is so light.

The tile gluing technique is fast but you need a little more material. The weight of the table is a bit heavy, so it’s impossible to guess what cardboard it’s made of.
It’s too early to tell how the two will perform over time and after several washes. I will update you.
