How To Make Fold Up Table Legs – This tutorial will show you how to make easy-to-set-up portable tables that are sized for craft shows, garage sales, flea markets, or just an extra table for finishing touches. My wife needed a portable table to display her handicrafts. The exhibition spaces vary in size, so he asked me to make two different sizes. I started making these forms about eight years ago and often get requests for instructions on how to make them. Instead of making an unnecessary set of sheets, I used a photo of one of each size sheet I had already made.
Larger tables will be cut to 2′ x 4′ and smaller tables will be cut to 15 ¾” x 36″. Using a router and paper, round and lightly sand all edges. If you’re wondering about table sizes, they are tailored specifically for the booth space – larger tables are at the front and smaller tables are usually at the ends. Typically, craft shows are limited by the space available, so craft show organizers tend to allocate booth space similarly—limited by depth and width, which is typically about 8 feet deep and wide times 4 feet.

Bigger table. The feet on the outside should be 36″. Cut the outside top wire at 24″. The feet on the inside should be 34″. Cut the top wire on the inside to 22″. The distance between the outer legs should be 22 1/8″.

A small table. The feet on the outside should be 33″. Cut the outside top wire at 15″. The feet on the inside should be 31″. Cut the top wire on the inside to 13″. The distance between the outer legs should be 13 1/8″.
NOTE: If you plan to make more than one set of legs for each size, I recommend making a weld pattern. I’ve included some pictures of the jig I made for this purpose. The connection is double-sided, with two parts on each side. Each side has an outer leg “fitting” for both size charts and the other side has an inner leg “fitting” for both size charts – see pictures. The red areas indicate where the pipe should be placed and clamped for welding (the clamps have been removed from the picture with the pipe). I have made tables for many years and they are all uniform.
For the strongest welds, the shape of the tip should match the curve of the upper channel. Solder the outer and inner edges of the legs. Attach end caps to the leg ends for floor protection.

Place the inner leg pieces inside the outer leg pieces, leaving an eighth of an inch of space between the top pieces (I’ve included a set of partially disassembled legs to demonstrate this step). Measure the outside leg 17 ¾” down from the top and mark where to drill the ¼” holes. To make sure the screw holes line up perfectly, I usually clamp the inner and outer legs together (leaving the legs “hanging” underneath) when drilling with the ground drill. While it is possible to drill the holes with a hand drill, I find it easier to drill with a ground drill because gravity helps keep the inner and outer legs aligned while drilling. After drilling the holes should look like those in the picture.
Insert the screws and secure with locknuts. Note: ¼” washers between the legs can be used, but I’ve found that they are not necessary.
This network has several functions. It fixes the gap between the inner and outer tops, creates a stable platform for the table top, and determines the actual height of the table top after installation. Once the tape is applied, the height of the top of the table legs will be 30″.
Foldable Woodgrain Lap Table
The straps sit on the bottom of the table legs and are secured with rivets. An easy way to apply tape is to turn the table legs upside down. Punch a hole in the center of the two rivets (see photo for location). Then spread the outrigger sections until the bottom of the outrigger is 30 inches from the ground. Measure the distance of each hole you just drilled and add 1 ½ inches to the measurement (about 24 inches for the largest table and 19 inches for the smaller table). Cut a length of tape to this length, fold the ends over ¾ inch, and secure with rivets. It should look like the picture. To use folding table legs, always place tape under both legs (see photo). The leg assembly is designed to fold up on itself.
Place the table top on a flat surface, best side down, and attach the top of the outer leg assembly to the bottom of the table with screws and pipe clamps. Place the clip on the outside of the foot. Afterwards, the inner legs can be folded flat. When set to use, all tables should be the same height.

Next, drill two pocket holes in each end of all four 1/2″x1″x15″ tabletop side panels and all eight 1/2″x1″x24-1/8″ tabletop brackets.
The picture above is what one side of the folding table looks like, so be prepared to set it up twice.

The line you just drew will show exactly how high you need to attach the 24-1/8″ support to the table storage. You’ll want to leave a 1/4″ gap between the supports and the top so you can put the 1/4″ plywood back in place later.
Position the top two 24-1/8″ storage brackets flush with the sides of the table and secure with Kreg screws. The next two will be about an inch apart. Please be very precise that each support is exactly 1/4″ from the top…
NOTE: Yes, I only drilled one hole for each bracket to save on screws…but if you’re inexperienced, it’s not the best idea, just stick to two holes. It’s harder to attach because you can’t use a normal Kreg clamp with one hole.
