To wire a 110 volt/120 volt outlet, you need 3 wires, a green or bare copper ground, a white neutral, and usually a black or red hot (live) wire (in this case mine is the hot purple wire). At home, you will usually use ROMEX wire which you can get at a hardware store. Typically you will find 14/2, which means the hot/neutral wire gauge is 14 and includes a bare ground. This type of wire is strong. The wire I used on the form is 14 awg, which means that the wires are in small wire bundles. It is easy to use in an industrial setting such as a farm.
Be sure to turn off the power at the breaker panel in the area you are working on. A surprise shock is never fun 🙂
Using your electrical stripper, strip the insulation off the wire 1/2 inch from the end, at the 14 awg mark. This will expose the bare copper wires.
If you are using thin wire, it is much easier to install speed connectors with bare wire. Slide the connector over the bare part of your wire and use the crimp slot to crimp the connector securely onto the wire. Pull lightly on the connector to make sure it is firmly on. Repeat for each string.
Connecting Stranded Wire To An Outlet
Loosen the green ground screw and attach the green patch to the green screw. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.
Note: If you are using solid copper wire, make a small loop in the wire and wrap it around the screw thread and tighten the screw.
Loosen the silver top screw, connect the neutral wire to one of the silver screws. On a standard 110/120 volt outlet plug, the neutral wire connects to the long prong hole. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.
If this outlet is the last plug in your cord, you will only use the first set of screws. If you are going to another outlet, you will use another set of screws for the wires going to the next outlet.

Then loosen the gold screw, and hot wire the gold screw (short prong side). Tighten the screws with a screwdriver.
Now we will add the outlet to the box by screwing the two connection screws that come with the outlet. When placing the wires in the box, make sure the bare ground does not touch any hot patches, it will drop your power and trip your breaker when you flip it.
Attach the outlet cover. We are ready to give it a try. Flip the breaker and you should be good to go.
